Name & Purpose Flour Sock Tag makes tags visible and undeniable. That white mark settles every argument instantly. Players practise speed, aim, and honest self-reporting β the flour does it for them.
a.k.a. Powder Tag, Chalk Sock Tag, Dust Tag
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16 | 8β30 players | 10β20 minutes | Large outdoor field
Materials One sock filled with plain flour per Chaser, tied shut at the top. Dark or coloured clothing recommended so flour marks show. Bucket of water and hand towels for cleanup.
Quick-Run Card
- Fill one sock with flour per Chaser. Tie the top firmly.
- Chasers carry their sock.
- Tag a runner by patting the flour sock against any body part shoulder-height or below.
- White flour mark = confirmed tag.
- Tagged player takes the sock and becomes the new Chaser.
- Old Chaser rejoins the runners.
Setup & Boundaries Play outdoors only β flour cloud indoors creates a mess and a respiratory hazard. Cone off a clear boundary. Check the field for obstacles. Pre-make the flour socks before the group arrives. Tie them tightly so they do not burst mid-game. Confirm no player has a flour or dust allergy β ask directly in the consent pre-brief. Have a water station nearby for hands.
How to Play Pick one Chaser for every 10 players. Give each Chaser a flour sock. On ‘Go!’, Chasers chase runners and tap them with the sock. The flour mark proves the tag β no arguments. Tagged players take the sock and become Chasers. Former Chasers drop nothing (the new Chaser takes the sock) and sprint back into the field as runners. No one is eliminated. The role transfers every tag. Play for 15 minutes, then gather everyone and see who has the most flour on their clothes β those players were the hardest to keep up with.
I-OPt Roles Offer players three simultaneous options each round:
- Runner β dodge, sprint, and stay flour-free as long as possible.
- Chaser β carry the sock, aim carefully, move efficiently to make clean tags.
- Field Marshal β stand at the boundary edge with a clipboard or mental note, track how fast roles are rotating, call out patterns β rotate into play after 3 minutes.
Inclusion Supports
- Players with respiratory sensitivities (asthma, dust allergies) should not play with flour socks. Substitute with a sock filled with dried beans β same weight, no dust. Or use a coloured sponge dipped in water for a wet-mark version.
- Players with mobility aids participate as Chasers β they carry the sock and tag anyone who comes within range; adjust the boundary so Chasers with mobility aids have a designated tagging zone that runners must pass through.
- Flour alternatives: use a chalk-filled sock, a wet sponge, or a paint-dabber for players with flour allergies.
Stewardship Action: After play, each player beats or shakes the flour off their clothes away from the grass to keep the field clear. 30-sec reflection: ‘The flour made every tag visible and honest. Where else in your day does visible evidence make things fairer?’
Consent Pre-brief: ‘This game uses flour. It will get on your clothes β that’s the point. Does anyone have a flour, dust, or wheat allergy? Speak up now. We have alternatives ready.’ Check for asthma too. ‘Tagging is a gentle pat β no throwing the sock at people’s faces.’ Mid-game check-in: After 5 minutes, pause and check in on allergy concerns and pacing. Opt-out/re-entry: Players step to the boundary and raise a hand. They re-enter as a runner whenever ready.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Flour allergy or asthma reaction | Low but serious | Pre-screen every player; have bean/sponge alternative ready |
| Sock bursting and releasing flour cloud | Medium | Tie socks in a double knot; pre-test before game |
| Players throwing sock at faces | Medium | Clear rule: pat only, no throwing; Chaser loses sock if rule broken |
| Slipping on flour on ground | Low | Outdoor grass surface; check for flour buildup near start zone |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Sock Juggle’ β everyone holds a flour sock and passes it between hands for 30 seconds to get comfortable with the prop.
- Boundary walk β jog the perimeter together once before play begins.
Debrief What? ‘Could you ever argue with a flour mark on your shirt? How did that change the game?’ So what? ‘How did having visible proof of a tag change the way everyone played?’ Now what? ‘What happens in real life when there is no clear evidence? How do we handle disagreements then?’
Cleanup & Reset Collect all flour socks. Dispose of flour-soaked socks or set aside for washing. Provide hand-washing station. Check field surface. Shake flour from clothing away from the group.
