Name & Purpose Freeze Tag is a classic tag game with a rescue twist. Runners must balance self-preservation with saving frozen teammates. It builds teamwork, spatial thinking, and movement.

Materials None. Optional: cones for boundary.
Quick-Run Card
- Pick 1β3 Chasers depending on group size.
- Chasers tag runners β tagged runners freeze in place, arms out.
- Any free runner can unfreeze a frozen player by touching them.
- Pick your unfreeze action before the game (see options below).
- Chasers win if all runners freeze at once. Runners win by lasting 5 minutes. Reset and swap Chasers.
Setup & Boundaries Mark a clear boundary with cones or natural markers. Adjust size for the group β larger groups need more space so Chasers do not instantly freeze everyone. Brief the unfreeze action before starting: pick one per round from options like high-five, spin in a circle, crawl through legs, or sing one line of a song. Brief everyone: frozen players stand with arms wide so rescuers can see them easily.
How to Play One to three players are Chasers depending on group size. Everyone else is a Runner. Chasers chase Runners and tag them. Tagged Runners freeze immediately β arms stretched wide, feet planted. Any free Runner can rescue a frozen player by completing the chosen unfreeze action. The rescued player is instantly free and back in the game. Chasers try to freeze every Runner at once to win the round. Runners try to keep each other free for the full time limit. At the end of each round, rotate who is Chaser. No one sits out the whole game β frozen is a temporary state with a clear re-entry path.
I-OPt Roles Offer players three simultaneous options each round:
- Evader β focus on staying free yourself; use speed and agility to avoid being tagged.
- Rescuer β hang back near frozen players and prioritise unfreezing your teammates, even at the cost of being tagged yourself.
- Decoy β run near frozen players to draw Chasers away, giving Rescuers a clear path to unfreeze.
Inclusion Supports
- Players with limited mobility take on the Rescuer role by default β they stay near frozen teammates and unfreeze them with a touch or a spoken word (‘You’re free!’) if physical contact is not comfortable.
- For younger or less confident players, give the group more Rescuers than Chasers so freezing is brief.
- Choose unfreeze actions that every player in the group can do β avoid crawl-through-legs if anyone has knee or back concerns. Let the group vote on the action.
- Allow frozen players to sit on the ground instead of standing with arms out if standing still for long periods is painful.
Stewardship Action: Between rounds, each Chaser walks the boundary and checks for any new hazards β stones, sticks, holes. 30-sec reflection: ‘This game only works if people help each other. What does it cost you personally to stop and rescue someone?’
Consent Pre-brief: ‘Tagging is a light touch on the arm or back β nothing rough. Unfreeze actions are agreed on before we start. If any action does not work for you, say so now and we will adjust.’ Mid-game check-in: After the first round, ask ‘Was the balance right? Too many Chasers? Too few Rescuers?’ Opt-out/re-entry: Players walk to the boundary edge and raise a hand. They re-enter as a Runner at the start of the next round.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Collision while unfreezing near Chasers | Medium | Frozen players stand with arms out as a visual signal; Chasers give 1-second grace after unfreeze |
| Crawl-through-legs causing injury | Low | Only use this action if every player confirms comfort; alternatives always available |
| Younger players left frozen too long | Medium | Set a rule: any player frozen for 30+ seconds auto-unfreezes |
| Chaser burnout β same person all game | Low | Rotate Chasers every round by counsellor call |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Freeze Dance’ β move freely to music, freeze when music stops β primes the freeze response.
- ‘Statue Gallery’ β each player strikes a frozen pose; others guess what the statue represents.
Debrief What? ‘How many times did you choose to rescue someone instead of running away yourself?’ So what? ‘What made you decide to rescue someone? What stopped you?’ Now what? ‘Who do you rescue in real life β and what is your version of the unfreeze action for a friend who is stuck?’
Cleanup & Reset Collect cones. Check boundary for any hazards. Reset for next group.
