Name & Purpose Hug Safe Tag uses human connection as the safety mechanic. Players must find and hug a partner to stay safe β but the hug expires in 5 seconds. It builds trust, quick thinking, and laughter.
a.k.a. Buddy Safe Tag, Pair Safety Tag, Cuddle Tag
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16 | 10β35 players | 10β20 min | Medium outdoor field or gym
Materials
- 4β8 boundary cones
- Optional: 1β2 coloured pinnies for Tagger(s)
Quick-Run Card Choose 1 Tagger (2 for groups of 20+). Runners stay safe by hugging any other runner. Hug lasts 5 seconds maximum β then both players must separate and move. No re-hugging the same person immediately after separating. Tagged player swaps with the Tagger. Play for 10β15 minutes.
Setup & Boundaries Mark a clear playing area. Choose Tagger(s). Walk the boundary with the group. Demonstrate the 5-second hug with a volunteer β count aloud together. Announce the alternative safety option (shoulder tap) before play begins.
How to Play
- Call “Go!” β the Tagger chases runners.
- Any runner who hugs another runner is safe from the Tagger.
- Count 5 seconds aloud or in your head. After 5 seconds, separate and move.
- You cannot immediately re-hug the same person β find someone new.
- Tagged player becomes the new Tagger. Old Tagger runs free immediately.
- Stay inside the boundary.
- Counsellor counts “5-4-3-2-1 separate!” when they see long hugs to help keep pace.
I-OPt Roles All three styles active simultaneously:
- Connector (Relater): Actively seeks out other runners, initiates hugs, keeps moving and building connection.
- Runner (Performer): Focuses on speed and evasion, finds a hug partner only when the Tagger is close.
- Observer (Searcher): Watches the Tagger’s movement, positions near multiple potential hug partners, moves proactively.
Inclusion Supports
- Players who prefer not to hug can use a two-handed shoulder tap as their safety action β equally valid, no questions asked.
- Players who are non-verbal can carry a coloured card (green = want a hug, yellow = shoulder tap only).
- Walking-only rounds available for mixed-mobility groups.
- Buddy pairing: two players move together throughout; either can initiate the safety contact.
Stewardship Collect cones together. 30-second reflection: “In this game, your safety depended on other people. How does depending on others feel? How does it connect to how we look after each other at camp?”
Consent Pre-brief: “In this game, hugging is the safety move β a friendly side or front hug. If you prefer a shoulder tap instead, tell me now or anytime during play β I’ll note it and enforce it. Nobody will ask why.” Mid-game check-in: After 3 minutes, counsellor calls “Quick pause β comfort check. Shoulder-tap option still open. Carry on!” Opt-out/re-entry: Players cross arms across their chest to signal a rest. They re-enter by uncrossing and calling “I’m back!”
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Player uncomfortable with hugging | High | Pre-brief alternative firmly; monitor and enforce throughout |
| Two players hug indefinitely to avoid play | Medium | Enforce 5-second limit; counsellor counts aloud |
| Tagger frustrated β everyone stays hugged | Medium | Add a second Tagger; shrink boundary slightly |
| Player collides running toward a hug partner | Low | Remind players to approach at walking speed when close |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “5-Second Greeting”: walk around and greet 5 different people with a handshake, wave, or high-five β builds comfort with brief physical contact.
- Boundary jog: everyone jogs the boundary edge once to warm up legs.
Debrief What? “Who did you look for when the Tagger was close? Who did you find yourself hugging most?” So what? “What does it feel like to depend on someone else for safety?” Now what? “Name one person at camp you could rely on more β and one way to show them you’re reliable back.”
Cleanup & Reset Collect cones and pinnies. Reset under 2 minutes.
Notes This game requires a strong pre-brief on consent and alternatives. Run it with groups who have already had some time together β day 2 or later in a camp session. With very large groups (30+), use 3 Taggers and a slightly larger field.
