Name & Purpose Mat Tag uses gymnastics or foam mats as stepping-stone islands. Players must stay on mats to stay safe and jump between them to escape taggers. It builds jumping confidence, spatial planning, and quick movement in a contained, padded environment.
a.k.a. Island Tag, Gym Mat Tag, Jumping Islands
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16 | 10β30 players | 10β20 minutes | Indoor gymnasium or large padded room
Materials 10β20 gymnastics or foam mats. Bibs or coloured vests for taggers (1β2 per game). No other equipment needed.
Quick-Run Card
- Spread mats across the gym floor β treat them as islands.
- Players remove shoes. One or two volunteers wear a bib and become Taggers.
- All players must stay on mats. Step off the mat and freeze in place for 5 seconds before rejoining.
- Jump, step, or move from mat to mat to escape Taggers.
- Tagged? Freeze on your current mat. A teammate high-fives you to unfreeze.
- Taggers cannot tag players who are unfreezing someone.
Setup & Boundaries Spread mats unevenly across the gym floor β leave gaps between them wide enough to require a real jump (around 0.5β1.5 m) but small enough that all players can reach the next mat safely. Use more mats and smaller gaps for younger players. Keep 3β4 mats near the edge as ‘safe zones’ for players who need a rest. Taggers start at the centre of the gym. All players start on any outer mat. Brief: ‘Mats are your islands β the floor is the sea. Step off and you freeze. Stay on mats, jump between islands, don’t get tagged.’
How to Play On the start signal, Taggers move between mats trying to tag other players. Players jump, step, or run mat-to-mat to avoid Taggers. Tagged players freeze on their mat and extend one hand for a high-five. Any untagged player can unfreeze them with a high-five β the Tagger cannot tag during this moment. A player who steps off a mat must freeze for 5 seconds (count aloud), then step back onto the nearest mat and continue. Taggers rotate every 3 minutes β call a pause, choose new Taggers by group vote or random selection, and continue.
I-OPt Roles Three simultaneous roles in every round:
- Mat Hopper (Active Movement): Jump and sprint between mats to evade Taggers.
- Rescuer (Strategic Movement): Focus on unfreezing frozen teammates rather than fleeing. Move deliberately from mat to mat to reach frozen players.
- Edge Anchor (Lower Intensity): Stay on the outer mats, offer a safe high-five point for frozen players, and call out directions to teammates. Move minimally but stay engaged. All three roles exist simultaneously every round.
Inclusion Supports
- Add more mats and reduce gaps for players with mobility challenges β make the islands easier to reach.
- Players who cannot jump can step or slide between mats.
- A player who uses a wheelchair can play on a version where the mat boundary is marked with tape on the floor β the rule applies equally.
- Tagger role is naturally lower-intensity β great for players who want less jumping.
- Keep 2β3 ‘extra large’ mats for players who need more stable footing.
Stewardship After play, take 30 seconds to stack mats neatly in the equipment room together. Reflect: ‘We moved that equipment as a team β when else does the group take care of shared resources together?’
Consent Pre-brief: Confirm players are comfortable jumping and landing on mats. Ask about any ankle or knee concerns β players with injuries take the Edge Anchor or Tagger role. Clarify that tagging is a light touch, not a grab. Mid-game check-in: After 5 minutes, call a brief pause. ‘Is the jumping distance okay for everyone? Should we adjust any mat gaps?’ Opt-out/Re-entry: Any player can step to a sideline mat and sit. They re-enter by stepping onto a mat at the edge of the field when ready.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Player slips on mat | Medium | Check mat grip side is down; players wear socks or bare feet only |
| Collision on the same mat | Medium | Brief: one at a time on small mats; two OK on large mats |
| Mat slides on floor | Medium | Use non-slip mat backing; check before play |
| Player jumps too wide and lands on floor awkwardly | LowβMedium | Keep mat gaps small; supervise landing technique |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Mat Balance’: stand on one mat, balance on one foot for 10 seconds.
- ‘Island Hop’: partners take turns jumping mat-to-mat β practice distances before full play.
- Jump warm-up: 10 small jumps in place, 5 lateral bounds.
Debrief What? ‘What was your strategy for staying unfrozen?’ So what? ‘How important were the rescuers? What happened when no one rescued?’ Now what? ‘When in real life do people get ‘frozen’ and need someone to reach out a hand?’
Cleanup & Reset Stack all mats in the proper storage area. Return bibs. Check the gym floor for hazards. Wipe down mats if needed.
