Name & Purpose Skunk Tag adds a single silly safe-pose to classic tag. Players must decide when to use their brief window of safety and when to run. It builds timing, humour, and quick thinking.

Quick-Run Card
- Pick 1β2 Chasers.
- The Skunk Pose: reach your right arm under your right leg and hold your nose. You are safe.
- You can hold the pose for 5 seconds max β then you must move.
- Tagged while not in pose? Swap roles with the Chaser.
- Old Chaser sprints away β they are now a Runner.
Setup & Boundaries Mark a clear boundary with cones. Flat ground is essential β players will be bending and reaching. Check for stones or holes before play. Demonstrate the Skunk Pose clearly before starting β some players need a moment to work out the arm-under-leg movement. Make it funny: exaggerate a disgusted ‘stinky’ face while in the pose.
How to Play Choose one Chaser for every 10β15 players. Chasers chase Runners. A Runner is safe from being tagged only while in the Skunk Pose β right arm reaching under the right leg, holding their nose. They can hold that pose for five seconds maximum. After five seconds they must move. If a Chaser tags a Runner who is not in the Skunk Pose, they swap roles instantly. Former Chaser becomes a Runner and sprints away. Play continues non-stop. No one sits out.
I-OPt Roles Offer players three simultaneous options each round:
- Classic Runner β use the Skunk Pose strategically to avoid being tagged; balance posing time with movement.
- Bold Runner β never use the pose; rely entirely on speed and agility β higher risk, higher thrill.
- Pose Camper β use the pose frequently near clusters of other runners, creating a hub of safety that other players gravitate toward β a social strategy.
Inclusion Supports
- Players with limited flexibility can use an alternative safe pose agreed on before the game β examples: both hands on head, one arm raised above the head, or one knee bent while balancing. The group votes on the alternative pose so it is a group choice, not a singled-out accommodation.
- Players with mobility aids can use the pose while stationary β the five-second rule still applies; they move along their usual path after posing.
- Left-handed players or players with right-arm limitations use left arm under left leg. State this explicitly in the pre-brief so it is clearly permitted.
Stewardship Action: After the game, check the play surface together for stones and debris disturbed during the dynamic bending movements. 30-sec reflection: ‘The Skunk Pose was your only protection β but you could only use it briefly. What does that say about how we use our resources?’
Consent Pre-brief: ‘The Skunk Pose involves bending β test it now before we start. If it does not work for your body, let me know and we will set up an alternative pose for you.’ Mid-game check-in: After 5 minutes, ‘Is the five-second limit working? Too short? Too long?’ Opt-out/re-entry: Step to the boundary edge and raise a hand. Re-enter as a Runner anytime.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Player loses balance while in pose | Medium | Check for flat ground; demonstrate slow version first |
| Flexibility limitation makes pose inaccessible | Low | Alternative poses pre-agreed in setup; normalised as a group option |
| Players holding pose indefinitely | Medium | Strict five-second rule; counsellor counts loudly if needed |
| Collision during role swap (tag moment) | Low | Swap is immediate but players must stay on their feet β no diving |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Pose Practice’ β everyone tries the Skunk Pose three times in a row to warm up the movement before play begins.
- ‘Silly Walk’ β everyone crosses the field in the silliest walk they can invent β loosens up the silliness energy that Skunk Tag requires.
Debrief What? ‘When did you use the pose and when did you decide to run instead?’ So what? ‘What was the strategy behind your choice? Did it work?’ Now what? ‘In life, when do you use your version of the Skunk Pose β hiding briefly β versus when do you just run with it?’
Cleanup & Reset Collect cones. Walk the surface for ground hazards. No other equipment.
