Name & Purpose Slow Motion Tag strips away speed and replaces it with strategy. Every single step counts. Players must read the space, plan their approach, and out-think rather than outrun their opponents.

Quick-Run Card
- Spread out β no one within one-step reach of another.
- Leader calls ‘Step!’ β each player moves exactly one foot, any direction.
- Tag any player below the cranium to send them to Ankle Biter status.
- Tagged players sit down right where they are β they become Ankle Biters.
- Ankle Biters tag standing players below the knee from a seated position.
- Both feet moved on one call = sit down.
- Last two standing are co-champs β start again.
Setup & Boundaries Start by spreading all players evenly across the space. Adjust boundaries so no player can tag another without moving at least one step. The leader controls pace by calling ‘Step!’ β slow the game down or speed it up by adjusting the interval between calls. Brief clearly: one foot moves, the other stays planted. Demonstrating a slow-motion step before play is essential β it needs to be physical to be understood.
How to Play Every player starts standing in their own personal space. When the leader calls ‘Step!’, each player may move one foot in any direction. That is the only movement allowed until the next call. Players tag each other during the step β if your hand connects with another player below their head on a step, they are tagged. Tagged players sit down immediately β they do not move from that spot. Seated players become Ankle Biters. Ankle Biters can reach out and tag any standing player who steps within reach β below the knee only. Moving both feet on a single ‘Step!’ call means sitting down automatically. Play continues until two players remain. Declare them co-champs and start a new round with everyone standing.
I-OPt Roles Offer players three simultaneous options each round:
- Hunter β take aggressive steps toward nearby players, prioritise tagging others.
- Evader β use every step to increase distance from threatening players, protect your position.
- Ankle Biter Anchor β once seated, become an active strategic hazard; communicate with other Ankle Biters to coordinate and tag standing players who pass through your cluster.
Inclusion Supports
- Players using wheelchairs roll one wheel on each ‘Step!’ call β the same single-movement rule applies.
- Players with balance concerns can touch a wall or use a cane; their step is any shift of weight in a direction.
- Seated Ankle Biters role provides natural inclusion for players who cannot stand for long periods β it is mechanically earned and not a consolation role.
- For players with hearing difficulties, use a visual signal (flag wave or arm raise) in addition to calling ‘Step!’
Stewardship Action: After each round, seated Ankle Biters check the floor immediately around them for slipping hazards before everyone stands for the next round. 30-sec reflection: ‘This game rewarded patience and strategy over speed. Where in your life does slowing down give you an advantage?’
Consent Pre-brief: ‘All tags are below the head. Seated players tag below the knee only. If sitting on the floor is uncomfortable for anyone, raise your hand now β we can provide a low stool.’ Mid-game check-in: After 5 minutes, ‘Is the step-call pace working? Too fast? Too slow?’ Opt-out/re-entry: Players raise a hand and step to the edge. They re-enter at the start of the next round in standing position.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Disagreement over whether both feet moved | Medium | Counsellor makes final call; frame it as a game feature not a punishment |
| Seated players being stepped on | Medium | Ankle Biters sit cross-legged with arms raised for visibility; standing players must see and avoid |
| Balance loss during slow deliberate steps | Low | Ensure flat surface; allow hand-on-wall for any player |
| Game drags if two evaders mirror each other | Low | Counsellor closes boundary by 1 metre after 5 minutes of stalemate |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Slow-Mo Walk’ β cross the room in the slowest possible walk, freeze on ‘Stop!’ β trains the step discipline.
- ‘Mirror Step’ β pairs face each other and take turns leading slow steps; follower mirrors exactly.
Debrief What? ‘How did strategy change when you only had one step at a time to work with?’ So what? ‘What patterns emerged in how people moved β did the strategies surprise you?’ Now what? ‘When in your life do you need to slow down and make very deliberate moves instead of reacting fast?’
Cleanup & Reset No equipment to collect. Check floor surface after seated round for any damp or marks. Ensure everyone can stand comfortably after sitting.
