Name & Purpose: Storm’n Norman is a one-sided capture-the-flag tag game. One player (Norman) hides a flag and defends it while converting Seekers to their team. It builds strategy, teamwork, and adaptive thinking.
a.k.a.: One-Sided Capture, Flag Hunt Tag, Norman’s Flag
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space: 10β16 years / 8β30 players / 15β25 minutes / Large outdoor area with natural cover or open field
Materials: One flag object (bandana, flashlight, shoe, hiking stick). Cones for base area.
Quick-Run Card: 1. Mark a base area. 2. Norman takes the flag and runs off to hide it (must be accessible). 3. Seekers count 40 seconds at base. 4. Seekers search for the flag. 5. Norman tags Seekers β tagged Seekers join Team Norman. 6. If Norman holds the flag while tagging, they drop it. 7. Seekers win by returning the flag to base. 8. Norman wins by tagging all Seekers.
Setup & Boundaries: Mark a clear outer boundary and a visible base area. Choose Norman by volunteer. Give Norman the flag. Walk the play area together first to identify any hazards. Norman heads out while Seekers count 40 seconds aloud at base. Flag must be placed somewhere accessible to all players β not up high, not buried.
How to Play: Seekers spread out after counting and search for the flag. Norman patrols the area and tags Seekers. Tagged Seekers immediately join Team Norman and help defend and tag. If a Seeker finds the flag, they pick it up and try to return it to base. If Norman (or any Team Norman member) tags a flag-carrier, the flag drops where it is. The tagged carrier joins Team Norman. Seekers win by getting the flag to base. Team Norman wins by converting all Seekers. Play resets β last tagged Seeker becomes the next Norman.
I-OPt Roles: Seeker β search, communicate flag sightings, carry the flag home. Norman/Team Norman β patrol, tag, coordinate defence, set ambushes. Scout β a Seeker who stays near the base perimeter, relaying information about Norman’s movements to other Seekers without going deep into the field.
Inclusion Supports: The Scout role is active and strategic without requiring deep-field running. Adjust the play area size for the group’s mobility. For night play, ensure all players have light sources. Players who prefer not to be tagged can be permanent Scouts at base β they direct traffic and strategy.
Stewardship: Retrieve the flag and all cones. Walk the play area after the game to check for dropped items. Reflection prompt: “Norman’s team grew as the game went on. How did Seekers adapt when they were outnumbered?”
Consent: Pre-brief: “This game involves searching, chasing, and light tagging. Norman will hide in the play area and may surprise Seekers. If surprise contact is not right for you, the Scout role keeps you at base directing strategy. Step out any time. Re-enter as a Scout or Team Norman member next round.” Mid-game check-in: After 5 minutes, blow a whistle to pause and check in. “Everyone accounted for? Anyone need to come in?” Opt-out/re-entry: Scout at base; re-enter next round.
Risks & Mitigation:
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Players getting lost in a large play area | Medium | Clear outer boundary; whistle check-ins every 5 minutes; buddy system |
| Night play: tripping on terrain | High (night) | Walk the area in daylight first; all players carry lights; flag in accessible spot |
| Surprise tagging causing startle | Medium | Brief that Norman may be hiding; no jumping out from behind β approach and tag |
| Flag placed in inaccessible location | Low | Rule: flag must be reachable by any player without climbing or digging |
Warm-Up Suggestions: Base Sprint β run from base to a marker and back to warm up the search-and-return mechanic. Stealth Walk β walk silently for 30 seconds, then sprint on command.
Debrief: What? “What was the turning point β when did it feel like Norman’s team was winning or losing?” So what? “How did strategy change as more Seekers joined Team Norman?” Now what? “When do you face a challenge where the odds shift against you β and how do you adapt?”
Cleanup & Reset: Retrieve flag and cones. Head count all players. Walk the boundary to confirm everyone is in.
