Name & Purpose Chain Hug Tag is an inclusive chasing game where the tag team grows with every catch. Players stay safe by hugging a partner β but only for 10 seconds. The game ends when the whole group connects. Nobody is eliminated.
a.k.a. Link Tag, Growing Chain Tag, Hand-Hold Tag
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16 | 10β30 players | 10β20 min | Medium outdoor field or gym
Materials
- 4β8 boundary cones
- Optional: 1β2 coloured pinnies for the starting Chain players
Quick-Run Card Two players hold hands β they are the Chain. The Chain chases. Only the two free end-hands can tag. Tagged player joins the Chain by holding a free end-hand. Free players get 10 seconds of safety in a hug with another free player. Chain cannot split. Last free player joins last β everyone ends up in the chain.
Setup & Boundaries Set boundary cones in a clear rectangle or oval. All players start inside. Choose 2 volunteers to be the starting Chain β give them pinnies if available. Explain: the Chain stays linked at all times. If it breaks, play pauses, chain reconnects, resume.
How to Play
- Call “Go!” β the Chain chases free players.
- A free player is safe from tagging while hugging another free player. The hug lasts a maximum of 10 seconds, then both must move.
- The Chain tags only with the two outermost free hands (the end players).
- When tagged, the player joins the Chain at the nearest end by holding a hand.
- Once the Chain reaches 6+ players, it becomes harder to steer β strategy matters.
- Play ends when every player is part of the Chain. Celebrate together.
- Offer a re-entry path: if the Chain breaks accidentally, the tagged player returns to being free while the chain reconnects β no punishment, just reset.
I-OPt Roles All three styles active simultaneously:
- Coordinator (Searcher): Calls out where free players are, directs the Chain’s direction, plans cut-off routes.
- Anchor (Performer): Runs hard at the outer ends of the Chain, reaches to make tags.
- Evader (Relater): Moves toward friendly players, sets up mutual hug-safety, communicates when 10 seconds are nearly up.
Inclusion Supports
- Players who prefer not to be hugged can use a two-handed clap (touching palms only) as an alternative safety signal.
- Players with mobility differences can join the Chain immediately as an interior link β they set the Chain’s pace and direction.
- Offer a walking-only round for groups with mixed mobility.
- Buddy system available: two players can move together throughout.
Stewardship Pick up all cones as a chain β literally walk in a line and collect them together. 30-second reflection: “How did it feel when the chain grew? What does that remind you of in real life?”
Consent Pre-brief: “Hugging is the safety move β it means a friendly side-hug or shoulder contact. If you prefer a hand-clap safety instead, that works perfectly. Tell your counsellor now if hugging is not comfortable for you.” Mid-game check-in: After the first tag, pause briefly β “Still good with the hug rule? Alternatives still available.” Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step to the boundary and watch. They re-enter as a free player at any moment by calling “Back in!” to the counsellor.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Chain yanks or drags a player | Medium | Remind Chain: walk or jog together β no jerking or pulling |
| Player uncomfortable with physical contact | Medium | Pre-brief alternative (hand-clap) clearly before starting |
| Long Chain becomes chaotic and someone falls | Medium | Call “Freeze!” anytime the Chain looks tangled; straighten and resume |
| Faster runners never get tagged | Low | Shrink the boundary slightly after 5 minutes if the Chain is struggling |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Chain Walk”: the whole group links hands and navigates through cones β builds Chain coordination.
- “10-Second Hug”: pairs practice the 10-second hug rule with a count-out-loud to feel the timing.
Debrief What? “What happened to how fast the Chain moved as it got longer?” So what? “How did being part of the Chain change your goal β from chasing to coordinating?” Now what? “Name a group situation where being connected to others slows you down but also makes you stronger.”
Cleanup & Reset Collect cones and pinnies. Fold and return pinnies. Reset takes under 2 minutes.
