Name & Purpose Werewolf Tag blends hide-and-seek with tag. One player hides as the Werewolf. Searchers spread out to find them. When found, the Werewolf bursts out and the chase is on β tagged players join the pack. It builds suspense, courage, and teamwork in both the hunt and the chase.

Quick-Run Card
- Pick the Werewolf β they put on a bib (optional) and hide while everyone counts aloud to 30.
- Searchers spread out across the playing area and look for the Werewolf.
- The first searcher to spot the Werewolf yells ‘WEREWOLF!’
- The Werewolf emerges and chases everyone.
- Tagged players become Werewolves and join the chase.
- Last player un-tagged becomes the Werewolf for the next round.
Setup & Boundaries Define clear boundaries before play β use cones, natural features, or existing field lines. Set a home base (e.g., a bench or cone cluster) that is safe β searchers may return to home base but can only stay 10 seconds before they must move on. The Werewolf hides within the same boundaries as searchers β no hiding outside the boundary. Brief the Werewolf: stay within bounds, you cannot move until someone yells ‘WEREWOLF!’ Brief searchers: spread out, keep moving, you must search β not huddle. Game leader stays visible to all players during the search phase.
How to Play Choose the first Werewolf by group vote or random pick. The Werewolf puts on a bib (optional) and hides while the group counts aloud to 30 at home base. Then the group spreads out across the play area searching for the Werewolf. Searchers must keep moving β no standing still for more than 10 seconds. When a searcher spots the Werewolf, they shout ‘WEREWOLF!’ loudly. The Werewolf then emerges and chases all players. Tagged players become additional Werewolves and join the chase. The last un-tagged player wins and becomes the Werewolf for the next round. If the Werewolf is not found within 3 minutes, they reveal themselves by howling and the chase begins.
I-OPt Roles Three simultaneous roles every round:
- Searcher (Active Seeker): Spread out, move constantly, look for the Werewolf. Full movement.
- Scout (Strategic Seeker): Follow other searchers from a distance β let someone else flush out the Werewolf, then sprint ahead. Less exposure, more strategic.
- Werewolf (or Pack Member): Hide and wait (Werewolf), then chase (Pack). The pack role lets recently tagged players remain active and engaged. All three roles exist simultaneously in every round.
Inclusion Supports
- Players who cannot run can play as the Werewolf β the hide-and-wait phase is full participation, and the chase is at their own pace.
- Scout role suits players who want to search but prefer less intense movement.
- Reduce the search area for smaller or less mobile groups.
- Add a ‘safe zone’ mat at home base for players who need a break β 30 seconds maximum before returning.
Stewardship After play, spend 30 seconds: pick up any items left in the search area and restore any moved objects to their original positions. Reflect: ‘The Werewolf was always part of the group β just playing a different role. When do we assume someone is ‘against us’ when they are just on a different path?’
Consent Pre-brief: Check whether any players are uncomfortable being alone in a hide phase or with sudden chasing. Offer the Scout role as an alternative to solo searching. Confirm the chase involves tag only β no grabbing. Mid-game check-in: After round 1, ask: ‘Was the search area too big or too small? Anyone need a boundary adjustment?’ Opt-out/Re-entry: Any player raises both hands and steps to home base β they are a ‘safe observer’ for that round and re-enter at the start of the next round.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Werewolf hides out of bounds | Low | Pre-brief boundaries clearly; game leader patrols |
| Searcher startled by sudden Werewolf reveal | Medium | Brief: shouting ‘WEREWOLF!’ gives everyone warning before chase |
| Player trips while running from Werewolf | Medium | Check surface for hazards; walk-only zone near obstacles |
| Player anxious about being alone while searching | Low | Pair searchers; make searching in pairs an option |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Howl Chain’: each player takes a turn howling as loud as they can β fun and a great voice warm-up.
- ‘Predator-Prey’: short partner game β one player closes eyes, the other moves silently β can the ‘predator’ catch the ‘prey’ by sound?
- Boundary walk: everyone walks the full boundary together before play to make sure all know the edges.
Debrief What? ‘What did it feel like to be the Werewolf β hiding and waiting?’ So what? ‘What does it feel like to be singled out β as the one everyone is looking for?’ Now what? ‘When does being noticed feel exciting versus uncomfortable β and what makes the difference?’
Cleanup & Reset Collect bibs. Remove cones. Make sure no player is still hiding β do a quick headcount before leaving the area.
