Name and Purpose
- Blanket Balloon Launch is a warm-weather cooperative game that builds group coordination, communication, and shared problem-solving.
- Players practise reading each other’s movements and making decisions as a collective, with no individual score and no elimination.
a.k.a.
- Group Catch, Cooperative Toss
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-24 players | 15-20 minutes | Open outdoor area or gym with flat surface
Materials
- Large blanket or tarp, 1 per group of 8-12 players (reusable)
- Water balloons, pre-filled (8-10 per game, extras on hand)
- Sponge balls (dry alternative)
- Bucket or bag for balloon debris
- Cones to mark the standing area
Quick-Run Card
- Players spread out around the blanket, each holding one edge or section.
- A launcher (staff or rotating player, not holding the blanket) tosses a water balloon into the air above the group.
- The group moves together to get under the balloon and catch it on the blanket.
- Once caught, the group relaunches it with a shared blanket snap.
- Offer challenges: highest launch, most catches in a row, aim for a target (a hoop, a bucket).
Setup and Boundaries
- Use cones to mark the standing zone around the blanket. Players stay within arm’s reach of the blanket edge at all times.
- Signal: 1 short whistle = pause; 2 short whistles = gather and hold the blanket still
- Check the ground for uneven surface or wet patches before play
- Launcher stands outside the blanket hold and tosses upward, not at players
How to Play
- Players spread out evenly around the blanket, each taking hold of an edge or section.
- The launcher (staff or a rotating player) tosses a water balloon into the air above the center of the blanket.
- The group communicates and moves together to get under the balloon and catch it on the blanket.
- On a shared signal (“One, two, three, launch!”), the group snaps the blanket to relaunch the balloon.
- Challenges to try:
- Launch as high as possible and catch it again (count how many times in a row)
- Aim for a target: a hoop on the ground or a bucket 10 feet away
- Pass the balloon to another blanket group (two blankets side by side)
- When a balloon pops, collect all pieces before launching the next one.
- Rotate the launcher role every 2-3 rounds so everyone tries it.
I-OPt Options
- Start: A (Active): Hold the blanket edge and move with the group
- Start: S (Support): Take the launcher role in the first round
- Start: Q (Quiet): Hold a corner position, which requires less movement than the middle sections
- Start: O (Observer): Watch the first launch and step in when a rotation happens
- Mid: A (Active): Call directions and lead the group movement (“Left! Left! Hold!) Consent
- Pre-brief: Describe the activity before starting. For those not comfortable with any element, observing or helping with setup is another option.
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, pause and check in. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down.”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step out at any time and rejoin when ready.
