Name and Purpose
- Fire Brigade Relay is a warm-weather team game inspired by old-fashioned bucket brigades.
- Players practise working in sequence, communicating quickly, and adapting their technique to keep as much water in the bucket as possible.
a.k.a.
- Leaky Bucket Relay, Water Chain
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 12-40 players | 15-20 minutes | Outdoor flat area that can get wet, with 10-20 feet of space per team lane
Materials
- 2 large buckets (trash-can size) per team: 1 filled with water, 1 empty
- 1 small bucket with holes per team (the water carrier)
- Cones to mark team lane positions and bucket spots
- Optional: measuring jug to compare final water levels fairly
- Optional: coloured pinnies to identify teams
Quick-Run Card
- Set up one full bucket and one empty bucket 10-20 feet apart per team. Mark positions with cones.
- Teams line up between the buckets. Players stand arm’s width apart.
- On the signal, the first player dips the holey bucket and passes it down the line, hand to hand.
- The last player dumps remaining water into the empty bucket and returns the holey bucket to the front.
- After the time limit (1-2 minutes), measure or estimate which team transferred the most water.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark each team’s full-bucket and empty-bucket positions with cones. Teams do not cross into other team lanes.
- Signal: 1 short whistle = go; 2 short whistles = stop and hold
- Staff position themselves at the end of each line to help with the dump and return
- Check the ground for uneven surface before play. Wet ground becomes slippery quickly.
How to Play
- Teams form a line between their two large buckets. Players stand arm’s width apart.
- On the signal, the first player scoops the holey bucket into the full bucket, lifting it out with as much water as possible.
- That player passes the bucket to the next player in line, who passes it to the next, and so on.
- The last player in the line dumps whatever water remains into the empty bucket, then passes the holey bucket back hand-to-hand (or runs it back) to the first player.
- The relay continues for a set time (1-2 minutes). Speed and technique both matter: faster passing means more trips, but smoother passing keeps more water in.
- When time is called, a staff member measures or estimates the water in each team’s empty bucket. Results are shared without ranking individuals.
- Debrief the strategy: teams discuss what helped and what they would change in round 2.
I-OPt Options
- Start: A (Active): Join the relay line as a passer
- Start: S (Support): Stand at the end of the line and manage the dump and return
- Start: Q (Quiet): Choose a middle position in the line (less pressure than the ends)
- Start: O (Observer): Watch the first round and step into the line for round 2
- Mid: A (Active): Full engagement, passing as fast and smoothly as possible
- Mid: S (Support): Call timing cues (“Ready! Pass!”) to help the line find a rhythm
- Mid: Q (Quiet): Focus on a smooth, steady pass rather than speed
- End: A (Active): Take the first or last position for the final round
- End: S (Support): Help measure the final water levels
- End: O (Observer): Announce the final results to both teams
Inclusion Adaptations
- Seated version: players sit on chairs or the ground and pass the bucket across their laps
- Two-hand hold: players who find the holey bucket difficult to grip alone use two hands. Line spacing adjusts accordingly.
Stewardship Moment
- Water is a shared resource. Ask: “Where does the water in this bucket come from? Where does it go when it spills?”
- After play, tip remaining water onto grass or a garden bed rather than down a drain where possible.
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game means passing a leaky bucket quickly and getting wet. For those who would prefer to stay on the drier end, the measurement and support roles on the sideline are ready for you.”
- For those not comfortable with any part of this activity, sitting out or joining as an observer is another option.
- Mid-game check: After round 1, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is the team working together?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step to the sideline by raising both hands. Re-enter by stepping back into any open spot in the line.
Risks and Mitigation
- Slipping on wet ground: check surface before play. Remind players to plant their feet before passing. Slow the pace for the first round.
- Bucket collision between teams: cones mark clear lane boundaries. Teams do not cross.
- Frustration from a losing result: frame the debrief around strategy (“What would you change?”) not outcome. Celebrate water transferred, not team rank.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Pass the Cup”: players stand in a line and pass a full cup of water down the line without spilling. Builds the passing instinct before the leaky bucket adds stakes.
- “Fill the Line”: players call out a position number as they step into the line (“One, two, three…”). Gets the group organised and energised before the relay starts.
Debrief Questions
- What? “How much water ended up in your bucket? What technique did your team try?”
- So What? “What slowed the water down or sped it up? What surprised you?”
- Now What? “When do you work in a chain where every person’s small action adds up to a big result?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Tip and stack all large buckets.
- Collect cones and equipment.
- Quick scan of the play area. Wet ground: advise other groups before they use the space.
