“Name and Purpose
- Splash Bingo mixes a classic number game with a water relay so every round has movement and excitement.
- Players practise listening focus while getting to cool off on a warm day.
a.k.a.
- Waterfront Bingo, Swim-and-Mark Bingo
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 20-30 minutes | Waterfront or pool edge with shallow wading zone and flat table surface nearby
Materials
- Laminated bingo boards (1 per player) or boards in clear plastic sleeves
- Dry-erase markers (1 per player)
- Small floating raft or waterproof tray (for holding unclaimed markers at water’s edge)
- Cones or rope for marking water entry zone
- Cloth bag and numbered tiles or cards for calling
- Whistle
- Towels
Quick-Run Card
- Set up laminated boards on a flat dry surface near the water.
- Place a floating tray with dry-erase markers at the water’s edge inside the marked zone.
- Call a number. Any player who has it on their board wades in, collects a marker, marks their square, and returns the marker to the tray.
- First player to complete a row calls out loud. Celebrate that round.
- Wipe boards and play again for 2-3 rounds total.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark the water entry and exit point clearly with cones or a rope line
- Confirm water depth is appropriate. Maximum knee-deep for the relay zone.
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause all movement; 2 whistles = exit water immediately and gather
- Check ground between table and water for slippery patches, rocks, or uneven terrain
- Staff stationed at water’s edge throughout
How to Play
- Each player receives a laminated bingo board and finds a spot at the table.
- Staff calls a number from the draw bag.
- Players who have that number on their board walk quickly to the water zone, collect a dry-erase marker from the floating tray, mark their square, and return the marker.
- Multiple players can be in the water zone at the same time. Remind players to move carefully and give each other space.
- First player to complete a row shouts their choice of win call. Celebrate with the whole group.
- Wipe boards clean between rounds. Play 2-3 rounds or until the group is ready to move on.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Wade in each round to collect and return markers
- S (Support): Help a buddy track their board and remind them when their number is called
- Q (Quiet): Stay at the table and walk slowly to the water zone. No rushing needed.
- O (Observer): Call out numbers with the staff, or track which numbers have been called on a shared list
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer not to enter the water can have a designated staff member retrieve their marker for them. Their board is equally valid.
- Large-print bingo boards available for players who need them
- Verbal number calls paired with a visible number display on a whiteboard
Stewardship Moment
- All boards are laminated or sleeved so they can be wiped and reused indefinitely. No single-use paper.
- At the end of play: collect markers, check the floating tray, and do a 60-second sweep of the area for any dropped items.
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘In this game you will walk into the water to collect a marker when your number is called. For those not comfortable entering the water, a buddy or staff member can collect your marker. You play exactly the same game either way.’
- Mid-game check: After round one, ask the group to give a thumbs up, sideways, or down. Adjust pace or depth if needed.
- Opt-out: Raise your hand and a staff member will assist. Rejoin at any point in any round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Slipping on wet ground between table and water: Walk only, no running. Check surface before play.
- Crowding at the water entry point: Stagger entries. If more than 3 players need the same number, take turns calmly.
- Sun exposure near water: Schedule during cooler parts of the day or ensure shade nearby. Staff aware of campers with sun sensitivities.
- Marker loss in water: Attach a short cord to markers so they float and stay with the tray.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Number Stretch’: Staff calls a number 1-5. Players do that many jumping jacks, then sit back down. Gets listening ears on.
- ‘Wading Walk’: Everyone walks slowly through the water zone once together before play begins, to get comfortable with the surface.
Debrief Questions
- What? ‘What was it like when your number was called and you had to move fast?’
- So What? ‘How did you decide whether to rush or take your time?’
- Now What? ‘Where in your day do you have to pay close attention and act quickly when you hear something?’
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect and dry all laminated boards
- Return markers to a zip bag for next use
- Remove floating tray from water
- 60-second sweep of play area for dropped items or litter”
