Name and Purpose
- Cool-Off Hot Potato is a classic listening and reaction game with a refreshing water twist.
- Players practise focus, quick passing, and graceful moments in the spotlight on a warm day.
a.k.a.
- Sponge Pass, Splash Potato
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players | 15-20 minutes | Outdoor grassy area with room for a seated or standing circle
Materials
- Wet sponges, 2-3 per round (standard car-wash sponges work well)
- Bucket of water for soaking and re-soaking sponges between rounds
- Music source (phone and portable speaker)
- Towels for players who want them
Quick-Run Card
- Players sit or stand in a circle.
- Music starts. Pass the wet sponge around the circle.
- Music stops. Player holding the sponge squeezes it over their own head for the splash.
- That player picks a new role: DJ for the next round, scorekeeper, or cheerleader.
- Re-soak the sponge, music starts again. Play 3-5 rounds.
Setup and Boundaries
- Choose soft, flat ground. Grassy areas preferred.
- Signal: music stopping is the game signal. 1 whistle = staff call to pause.
- Soak sponges in the bucket before play. Re-soak between rounds for maximum splash.
- Check for sharp objects in the circle area before play.
How to Play
- Players form a circle seated on the ground or standing, whichever they prefer.
- One wet sponge starts. When the music plays, players pass it quickly around the circle.
- When the music stops, the player holding the sponge squeezes it over their own head for the splash, or gently sets it down if they prefer.
- That player does not sit out. Instead, they take on a fun role for the next round: pick the music, count passes, or lead a cheer.
- Staff re-soaks the sponge in the bucket and restarts the music.
- Play continues for 3-5 rounds. Celebrate everyone’s good attitude throughout.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Pass the sponge, take the splash, stay in the circle every round
- S (Support): Count passes out loud, cheer when the sponge gets squeezed, help track scores
- Q (Quiet): Pass gently at a steady pace without rushing. No need to rush or shout.
- O (Observer): Control the music. Watch for the right moment to stop it.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer not to get wet can sit one step outside the splash zone. They pass from that position and are equally part of the game.
- Sponge can be passed in a small plastic bowl for players who prefer not to hold it directly.
Stewardship Moment
- Sponges are fully reusable. Re-soak and play again, round after round. Nothing to throw away.
- Reflection: “We got all the fun of a water game with zero waste. What other reusable materials could we use for water activities?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “In this game you will pass a wet sponge around the circle. When the music stops, the person holding it squeezes it over their own head for a splash, or sets it down. Either way, you get a fun job next round. For those not comfortable with getting wet, there is a role just outside the splash zone that is just as important.”
- Mid-game check: After round 2, quick check-in: thumbs up, sideways, or down.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Step out at any point. Return by stepping back into the circle between rounds.
Risks and Mitigation
- Sponge squeezed on another player instead of self: staff model the self-squeeze clearly in round one. Rule is firm: you squeeze over your own head only.
- Slipping on wet grass: Players seated on the ground reduces fall risk. Walk carefully when moving around the circle.
- Sponge thrown instead of passed: remind players the sponge is passed hand-to-hand, not thrown.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Squeeze Pass”: pass a dry sponge around the circle as fast as possible before switching to the wet one. Gets the rhythm going without the pressure.
- “Countdown Clap”: group claps together, counting down from 10. Good for building group energy.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was going through your mind when the sponge got close to you?”
- So What? “How did it feel when it was your turn in the spotlight, even for a moment?”
- Now What? “When is it helpful in life to stay calm under a little bit of pressure?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Squeeze out sponges and set them to dry
- Pour out remaining water from the bucket
- Dry the circle area if needed
- Store sponges for the next session
