Name and Purpose
- Sponge Bucket Relay is a classic team relay that combines movement, strategy, and a guaranteed soaking.
- Players build teamwork and pacing skills while competing to fill their bucket first.
a.k.a.
- Drip and Fill, Sponge Race
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players in even teams of 4-8 | 15-20 minutes | Outdoor or gym space with a 10-15 metre straight relay lane
Materials
- 2 large sponges (one per team)
- 2 small empty buckets (start line, one per team)
- 2 large buckets of water (finish line, one per team)
- Cones for lane markers
- Measuring stick or marked tape line on the side of the fill bucket to judge winner
- Towels
- Whistle
Quick-Run Card
- Teams line up at the start line behind their empty bucket. Large water bucket is at the finish line.
- First player runs to the water bucket, dunks the sponge, runs back with sponge held ABOVE their head.
- Squeeze all water into the team’s empty bucket. Hand sponge to next player.
- Relay continues until one team’s bucket reaches the fill line.
- Announce and celebrate both teams.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark start line and finish line clearly with cones
- Place large water buckets at the finish line, small empty buckets at the start
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Check the running surface for wet patches before play
- Brief the above-head rule before play: sponge travels back at head height or above
How to Play
- Divide players into two even teams. Teams line up in single file behind their empty bucket at the start line.
- On the start signal, the first player in each line runs to their team’s large water bucket at the finish line.
- Dunk the sponge fully. Pick it up and carry it back to the start line with the sponge held above their head. This is the rule that gets everyone wet.
- Squeeze every drop of water from the sponge into the team’s empty bucket at the start line.
- Hand the sponge to the next player. That player runs immediately.
- Relay continues until one team’s bucket reaches the fill line. That team wins the round.
- Optional second round: teams swap lanes and go again.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run the relay, carry the sponge, squeeze the water
- S (Support): Coach the line. Remind runners of the above-head rule. Count passes.
- Q (Quiet): Walk the relay at your own pace. You still score water for your team.
- O (Observer): Watch the water level in the bucket and call out progress. Help judge the winner.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Walking pace is equally valid. No penalty for slower runners.
- Sponge squeezing can be done with two hands, against the side of the bucket, or with a teammate’s help.
Stewardship Moment
- Water from the buckets is collected back on-site. No water is wasted beyond the play area.
- After play, pour any remaining bucket water onto nearby plants or grass.
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘In this relay you will carry a soaking wet sponge above your head. You will get wet. For those not comfortable with that, there are cheering, coaching, and judging roles that keep you in the game.’
- Mid-game check: After round one, check in with the group before a second round.
- Opt-out: Step to the sideline any time. Re-enter at the start of a fresh round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Slipping on wet running surface: walk or jog only, no sprinting. Check and dry key slip zones before play.
- Collision between players at the water bucket: stagger start times slightly if lanes are close together.
- Sponge thrown rather than handed: reinforce the handoff as a pass, not a throw, in the pre-brief.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Sponge Squeeze’: everyone squeezes the sponge once before play to get a feel for it. Normalises the activity.
- ‘Relay Walk-Through’: one player from each team walks the full course slowly before play starts.
Debrief Questions
- What? ‘Which part of the relay did your team figure out as you went?’
- So What? ‘What made the biggest difference in how much water you collected?’
- Now What? ‘When does small consistent effort by a whole team add up to something big?’
Cleanup and Reset
- Pour remaining bucket water onto grass or plants
- Collect and wring out sponges for storage
- Stack and dry buckets
- Cones collected and stored
