Name and Purpose
- Water Play Extravaganza is a high-energy, joyful cool-off activity that lets everyone get thoroughly soaked.
- It builds free play, laughter, and shared experience in an unstructured but safe setting.
a.k.a.
- Splash Zone, Free-for-All Splash
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-50 players | 20-30 minutes | Large open outdoor area with obstacle course layout; access to a water source; ideally partly shaded
Materials
- Small reusable water guns or squirt toys, one per player (or shared from a central station)
- Reusable water balloons in tubs (optional)
- Hoses on stands or supervised by staff (not hand-held by campers)
- Obstacle course elements: cones, hula hoops, low hurdles, tunnels
- Towels
- Trash bags for any balloon debris
- Change-of-clothes reminder given to players before the activity
Quick-Run Card
- Set up obstacle course with cones and elements. Fill water toys at the water source.
- Brief players on boundaries, the stop signal, and water-gun etiquette (no face shots).
- Give each player a water toy. On the go signal, everyone enters the course.
- Players move through the course freely, splashing each other along the way.
- End with two whistle blasts. Everyone helps collect equipment and do a 60-second area sweep.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark the outer boundary of the play area with cones
- Water source (hose tap or large tubs) stays in one fixed location, staffed by one adult
- Signal: 1 whistle = slow down and look up; 2 whistles = stop and gather at the centre
- Check the course for trip hazards, exposed roots, or slippery patches before play
- Remind staff to wear clothes they are comfortable getting wet in
How to Play
- Players gather outside the course boundary for a brief and then enter together on the go signal.
- Everyone moves through the obstacle course at their own pace, using their water toys on each other and on the course elements.
- Hoses are operated by staff only. Campers can ask a staff member to spray them.
- There is no scoring and no winning. The goal is to move, laugh, and get soaked.
- Players can return to the water station to refill their toys whenever they need to.
- Two whistle blasts end the round. Players place their toys in the collection tub and do a quick 60-second sweep for any balloon fragments or litter.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run the full course, engage in splashing throughout
- S (Support): Help manage the water station, refill toys for others, or operate a gentle spray zone
- Q (Quiet): Walk through the course at their own pace, participate in splashing only when they choose
- O (Observer): Watch from outside the boundary cones, enter when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer less soaking can wear a rain poncho or stay near the edges of the course where splash intensity is lower
- Obstacle course elements can be adjusted for different mobility needs: wide lanes, lower hurdles, optional crawl sections
Stewardship Moment
- If reusable water balloons are used, assign two players as Fragment Monitors whose job is to collect pieces during play as well as at the end.
- Reflection: “We used a lot of water today. What’s one way we can be more mindful of water use in our daily routines?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game is meant to get you wet. For those not comfortable with full splashing, there are roles at the water station and the edges of the course where you can participate at a lower splash level. All roles are part of the game.”
- Water-gun etiquette brief: “We keep water toys aimed below the neck. No face shots.”
- Mid-game check: Staff circulate and check in with quieter players. A raised hand means “ease up near me.”
- Opt-out and re-entry: Any player can step outside the cones to take a break. Rejoin by stepping back in.
Risks and Mitigation
- Slippery ground from water accumulation: check drainage before setup; avoid areas that pool; lay non-slip mats near water station
- Hoses used as weapons (high-pressure face spray): hoses are staff-operated only; brief this clearly before play
- Overheating during setup: have players in shade during the brief; begin play quickly
- Balloon fragment litter and slip hazard: Fragment Monitors collect continuously; mandatory sweep at the end of each round
- Players running into each other on the course: remind players to watch where they are going; designate one-way flow through the course if crowding occurs
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Drip Line”: players line up and pass a cup of water over their heads to the person behind them, spilling as they go, to get comfortable with the wet feeling before full play
- “Freeze Spray”: players walk freely; when a staff member calls their name, they freeze and get a gentle spray from a water toy before moving again
Debrief Questions
- What? “What moment made you laugh the hardest? What surprised you?”
- So What? “This game had no rules about winning. How did that change how you played?”
- Now What? “What does it feel like to just play for the sake of playing? When else do you get to do that?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all water toys and return to storage tubs
- Collect any balloon fragments
- Turn off and store hoses
- 60-second boundary sweep for litter and equipment
