Name and Purpose
- Wet Wiffle Ball plays like a regular wiffle ball game but every base is a water basin. Reaching a base means getting your feet wet.
- Players enjoy a familiar game format with a refreshing twist that rewards base runners.
a.k.a.
- Water Base Ball, Splash Wiffle
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-25 players | 30-40 minutes | Large flat outdoor space with room for a standard wiffle ball diamond. Grassy or packed dirt surface.
Materials
- 1 wiffle ball bat
- 4-6 wiffle balls
- 4 large tubs or aluminum basins (bases and home plate)
- Water supply: hose, pitchers, or clean pre-filled milk jugs
- Cones for foul lines and outfield boundaries
- Towels
- Whistle
Quick-Run Card
- Set up 4 basins as bases in a diamond shape. Fill each with enough water to cover feet.
- Divide into two teams. Fielding team spreads across the diamond and outfield.
- Batting team sends players up one at a time. Pitcher throws underhand.
- Standard wiffle ball rules. Any player who reaches a base stands in the basin.
- 3 outs per inning. Play 3-5 innings. Most runs wins.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark foul lines and outfield boundary with cones
- Fill basins to a safe depth: water over feet is enough. No deeper.
- Confirm basin edges are stable and will not tip when stood in
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Check play surface for uneven ground, especially around the basins
How to Play
- Set up basins as first, second, third base, and home plate. Fill each with water.
- Divide into two teams. Decide batting order for the first team up.
- Pitcher throws underhand. Batter hits as in standard wiffle ball.
- Fair ball is in play. Fielding team retrieves and throws to get batters out (standard force-out at base or tag rules).
- Any player who safely reaches a base stands in the basin. It is a fun reward, not a penalty.
- 3 outs retire the batting side. Teams swap. Play 3-5 innings.
- Note: original suggested adding pudding, confetti, or noodles to basins. Clean water only is recommended for hygienic and stewardship reasons. If the group wants a variation, chilled water or a drop of food colouring is a safe, low-waste option.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Play as a batter, base runner, or active fielder
- S (Support): Play in a less-active fielding position such as backstop or outfield corner. Still part of the game.
- Q (Quiet): Play as catcher or umpire. Slower pace, central to the game.
- O (Observer): Keep score, track outs, manage the water basin refills between innings.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Tee-ball style: batter places the ball on a cone or cup and hits from a stationary position. No pitching required.
- Players who prefer not to stand in water basins can tag the basin edge with a foot instead of standing in it.
Stewardship Moment
- Pre-fill using saved milk jugs or pitchers rather than a running hose where possible. Saves water.
- After play, pour basin water onto nearby grass.
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘In this game the bases are water basins. When you reach a base safely, you stand in the water. For those not comfortable standing in the water, you can touch the edge of the basin with your foot instead. Same rules, same run counts.’
- Mid-game check: After the first inning, quick check-in with both teams.
- Opt-out: Any player can step out between innings and take a fielding or observer role.
Risks and Mitigation
- Slipping in or around water basins: basins placed on flat ground only. Check stability before play. Players step in and out carefully.
- Basin tipping: use wide stable basins. Do not use narrow or lightweight containers.
- Ball hit hard into a basin: soft wiffle balls reduce risk. Basins should not be directly in the throwing or batting line.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Basin Splash’: everyone walks to each base and puts one foot in the water before play starts. Normalises the basins and gets some laughs.
- ‘Underhand Toss Circle’: players warm up throwing and catching underhand in pairs for 2 minutes.
