Name and Purpose
- All Together builds trust and communication through a simple physical challenge.
- Partners practise cooperation, weight-sharing, and creative problem-solving together.
a.k.a.
- Back-to-Back Rise, Partner Stand-Up Challenge
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 2-40 players (in pairs) | 5-15 minutes | Flat open floor or even grass
Materials
- Flat surface (gymnasium floor or level outdoor area)
- Optional: yoga mats or soft surface for comfort
- No other materials required
Quick-Run Card
- Players pair up and sit back-to-back on the ground.
- Partners link arms behind their backs.
- On “Go,” partners work together to stand up without separating their arms.
- Successful pairs can try a group challenge: join with another pair and stand up as four.
- Optional harder round: no talking allowed during the attempt.
Setup and Boundaries
- Ensure surface is flat, dry, and clear of hazards
- Signal: 1 short whistle or raised hand means pause; 2 short whistles mean stop and gather
- Allow enough space between pairs to avoid collisions while standing
How to Play
- Invite players to find a partner who is roughly similar in size (not required, but helpful).
- Partners sit back-to-back on the ground and link arms behind their backs.
- On the leader’s signal, pairs work together to stand up without separating their arms.
- Pairs who stand successfully celebrate together, then look for another pair to join.
- Groups of four attempt the same challenge: all linked, all rising together.
- Larger groups (six or eight) can try if space allows.
- Optional: run a silent round where no verbal communication is allowed.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Attempt the stand-up challenge with a partner or larger group
- S (Support): Coach another pair from the side, offering encouragement and ideas
- Q (Quiet): Attempt the challenge seated using a modified arm-hold, without full standing
- O (Observer): Watch the first round, then choose to join a pair in round two
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who cannot sit on the ground can attempt a standing back-to-back arm-link challenge instead, working to move together without separating
- Pairs who find the arm-link uncomfortable can hold a short rope or towel between them instead
Stewardship Moment
- No materials used, so there is no cleanup required. Use this moment to reflect: “This activity needed no equipment at all. What does that tell us about what we actually need to have fun together?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This activity involves sitting and linking arms with a partner. For those not comfortable with close physical contact, using a short rope or towel between partners is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After the first round, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is everyone feeling? Do you want to try a bigger group?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may step out at any time. Call “In!” and step into any pair or group to rejoin.
Risks and Mitigation
- Pulling too hard and falling backward: remind pairs to go slowly and communicate before pushing up
- Shoulder or arm strain: encourage players to stop if they feel discomfort; rope/towel option reduces strain
- Uneven pairs struggling while others succeed quickly: frame multiple attempts as part of the fun, not a race
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Mirror Walk”: pairs walk side-by-side, mirroring each other’s movements without talking
- “Lean In”: partners stand back-to-back and lean slightly into each other, finding their balance point
Debrief Questions
- What? “What made standing up together easy or hard?”
- So What? “What did you need from your partner to make it work?”
- Now What? “Where in your life do you need someone to have your back to get something done?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return yoga mats or borrowed equipment to storage
- No litter or materials to collect
- Space is ready for the next activity immediately
