Name and Purpose
- Bob the Weasel builds group cohesion through a chanting, movement, and guessing challenge.
- Players practise observation, deception (in good fun), and reading the group together.
a.k.a.
- Pass the Weasel, Weasel in the Circle
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-25 players | 10-20 minutes | Small open area, indoors or outdoors (no boundaries needed)
Materials
- One small object (the weasel): a beanbag, knotted sock, small ball, or similar
- Flat ground; no cones required for small circles
Quick-Run Card
- Players form a tight huddle in a circle, arms around each other’s shoulders. One player stands in the centre.
- The group passes the weasel secretly around the outside of the circle while chanting: “Bob the Weasel, keep it goin’, keep it goin’.”
- The centre player turns slowly, trying to guess who is holding the weasel.
- If the centre player’s back is turned, the holder may hold up the weasel. Everyone calls: “I saw the weasel!” then returns to the chant.
- When the centre player guesses correctly, the holder steps into the centre for the next round.
Setup and Boundaries
- No boundary markers needed for a circle game
- Signal: leader raises one hand to pause the round; two raised hands to stop and gather
- Ensure huddle spacing is comfortable; players should not feel squeezed against their will
How to Play
- Players stand in a circle, arms around each other’s shoulders in a huddle.
- One volunteer stands in the centre, eyes open, turning slowly.
- The group passes the weasel behind their backs while chanting: “Bob the Weasel, keep it goin’, keep it goin’.”
- The centre player may guess at any point by pointing to someone: “I think you have the weasel!”
- If correct, the holder steps into the centre and becomes the new guesser.
- If incorrect, the round continues.
- When the centre player’s back is turned, the weasel holder may reveal it briefly. Group calls: “I saw the weasel!” then returns to chanting.
- Play until each player has had a turn in the centre, or until energy naturally winds down.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Stand in the huddle and pass the weasel; take a turn in the centre
- S (Support): Help keep the chant going; encourage the centre player
- Q (Quiet): Stand at the edge of the huddle with lighter physical contact; participate in the chant softly
- O (Observer): Watch from just outside the circle; join when ready or take the first available turn in the centre
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer not to have arms around shoulders can stand in the circle holding wrists or holding a shared rope loop instead
- The weasel can be colour-coded (bright colour) to help players who have difficulty tracking it visually
Stewardship Moment
- The weasel is a reusable object; after play, return it to the activity kit.
- “This one little object kept 20 people entertained for 15 minutes. What does that tell us about what we really need?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves standing close together in a huddle with arms around each other. For those not comfortable with arm-around-shoulder contact, holding wrists or a shared rope is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After a couple of rounds, check in briefly. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. For those not comfortable with any element, an observer or helper role is another option.”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may step back from the huddle at any time. Step back in when ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Object dropped and players bending to grab it: pause the round, retrieve safely, restart
- Centre player becoming frustrated after many wrong guesses: offer a helpful clue after 5 incorrect guesses (e.g., “It’s on the left half of the circle”)
- Huddle becoming too tight: remind players that comfortable spacing is part of good play
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Secret Pass”: players pass a small object behind their backs in a line to get used to the passing mechanic
- “Chant Practice”: teach the group the “Bob the Weasel” chant before starting, so everyone knows it
Debrief Questions
- What? “What strategies did you use to hide the weasel? What strategies did the centre player use to find it?”
- So What? “How did working together as a group feel? Was it easy or hard to keep the secret?”
- Now What? “When in life is it helpful to pay close attention to what’s happening around you?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return the weasel object to the activity kit
- No other materials to collect
- Space is immediately ready for the next activity
