Name and Purpose
- Everybody’s It Tag is a high-energy game where every player is a tagger and a target at the same time.
- Players build agility, spatial awareness, and quick decision-making in a joyful, fast-moving format.
a.k.a.
- Everyone’s It, Free-for-All Tag
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players | 10-20 minutes | Large open field or gymnasium
Materials
- 4-8 cones to mark boundaries
- Optional: coloured bibs so players can spot each other easily
- Flat, even ground free of hazards
Quick-Run Card
- Mark a clear boundary with cones. Everyone is “It” at the same time.
- On “Go,” all players try to tag others while avoiding being tagged.
- A tagged player sits down in place and extends their arms to tag runners passing nearby.
- A seated player who successfully tags a runner may stand up and rejoin the game.
- Round ends on the whistle. Everyone celebrates and resets for the next round.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a clear play zone with cones (adjust size to group; larger group needs more space)
- Signal: 1 short whistle means pause; 2 short whistles mean stop and gather
- Check ground for holes, wet patches, or debris before play
- Remind players: tags are gentle shoulder touches only, no pushing or grabbing
How to Play
- Players spread out in the play zone.
- Leader announces: “Everybody’s It! When I say ‘Go,’ you are all trying to tag each other while staying in bounds.”
- On “Go,” all players move and tag freely.
- When a player is tagged, they sit down immediately in place.
- Seated players extend their arms and can still tag runners who come close. A seated player who tags a runner stands up and re-enters the game.
- Note on simultaneous tags: decide before play starts whether two players tagging each other at the same moment means both sit, or both stay standing. Either is fine; just be consistent.
- Round ends on the whistle. Reset and play again.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Move freely, tag others, and avoid being tagged
- S (Support): Play a boundary-monitor role; call out players who step out of bounds
- Q (Quiet): Move at a walking pace within the zone; participate in tagging at your own comfort level
- O (Observer): Watch from outside the boundary; join at any round restart
Inclusion Adaptations
- Walking-only round: all players walk (no running) for one round to lower the intensity and allow all fitness levels to participate equally
- Players who cannot sit on the ground when tagged may take a wide-stance pause position with arms extended instead
Stewardship Moment
- “We just used a field and some cones. Before we leave, let’s take 30 seconds to check the space and leave it better than we found it.”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves gentle tags and moving around lots of other people. For those not comfortable with the full-speed version, a walking-only round is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After the first round, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is everyone feeling about the pace and contact level?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may step outside the boundary at any time by raising one hand. Step back in at any round restart.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collisions from players running in opposite directions: remind players to keep their heads up and slow down near others
- Aggressive tagging or pushing: restate at the start that tags are light shoulder touches only; pause immediately and restate if it escalates
- Players stuck sitting for a long time: the re-entry mechanic (tag a runner to stand) keeps them active; seated players can reposition by shuffling
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Slow-Mo Tag”: play one round in slow motion to warm up muscles and establish expectations for gentle contact
- “Name Tag”: players call out the name of who they are about to tag before tagging, to build awareness
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened to your strategy as more and more players sat down?”
- So What? “How did it feel to be ‘It’ and a target at the same time? What helped you make quick decisions?”
- Now What? “When in life do you have to watch out for yourself and look out for others at the same time?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect cones and return to storage
- Check play area for hazards
- Return any borrowed bibs or equipment
