Name and Purpose
- Four Cones is a quick-reaction team game where groups race to form their line around a called cone number.
- It builds listening, cooperation, spatial reasoning, and healthy team competition in short bursts.
a.k.a.
- Cone Dash, Four Corners Relay
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 12-40 players (4 equal teams) | 10-20 minutes | Open gym or outdoor field with room for a 25-30 foot square
Materials
- 4 cones (numbered with tape or colour-coded)
- Optional: team name cards or coloured bibs to help teams identify themselves
Quick-Run Card
- Place 4 cones in a square, 25-30 feet apart. Number each cone 1-4.
- Divide into 4 equal teams. Each team lines up facing cone 1 from a different direction (North, South, East, West).
- Leader calls a cone number. All teams race to form their line around the named cone in their original order.
- First team lined up AND calling their team name earns a point.
- First team to 5 points wins the round. Start a new round with teams choosing new names.
Setup and Boundaries
- Place 4 cones in a clear square; mark cone numbers visibly with tape or a marker
- Signal: raised hand or 1 short whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Check ground for hazards before play; ensure the path between cones is clear and even
How to Play
- Divide players into 4 equal teams. Let each team choose a team name.
- Teams line up in their formation facing cone 1 from their assigned direction (N, S, E, W). Players note their order in line.
- On the start signal, teams jog (not sprint) to cone 1 and form their line in the agreed direction and order.
- Leader then calls a new cone number (any of 1-4). All teams race to line up around the called cone, maintaining their same direction and order relative to that cone.
- The first team fully lined up in correct order and calling their team name earns a point.
- Continue calling new cone numbers. First team to reach 5 points wins.
- After each round, teams choose a new name and directions are reshuffled. This keeps the game fresh and lowers the pressure on the scoreboard.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run with your team to each cone; lead the line
- S (Support): Remember the team’s line order and call it out; encourage teammates during the dash
- Q (Quiet): Walk at your own pace; the team waits for all members before calling the name
- O (Observer): Watch from the side, track scores, call out which team arrives first; choose when to join
Inclusion Adaptations
- “All members in” rule: a team may only call their name when ALL members are in line; this naturally paces faster players to support slower ones
- Chairs variation: place chairs at each cone; players who need to sit can take a seat rather than stand in line
Stewardship Moment
- 60-second equipment pickup after play
- Ask: “This game needed everyone to move together. How does the group do when it has to match someone else’s pace?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “We’ll be jogging between cones. For anyone not comfortable running, walking is great. Your team will hold their line until you arrive.”
- Mid-game check: After the first two rounds, pause. “Quick check. Is everyone happy with their spot in the line? Any swaps needed?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player may step to the sideline at any time. Raise your hand to re-enter at the next cone call.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collisions when all four teams converge on the same cone: remind players to slow down as they approach and move around each other, not through each other
- Teams pushing to be first: emphasise that the call only counts when the whole team is in line
- Confusion about team order: set the order clearly at the start and repeat it before each round if needed
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Follow the Leader”: teams walk in a line from cone to cone before the game starts, getting used to moving together
- Quick name-and-gesture round: each team member says their name with a physical action; team repeats it
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when your team had to move fast together? What made it harder or easier?”
- So What? “What did you notice about staying in order when everything was moving quickly?”
- Now What? “When else in camp life do you need to move as a group and keep things organised?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect 4 cones
- Clear the play area
- Return equipment to storage
