Name and Purpose
- Hula Hoop Pass is a cooperative team challenge that builds communication, problem-solving, and group coordination.
- Players work together to move a hoop around a circle without breaking their chain.
a.k.a.
- Ring Pass, Circle Hoop Challenge
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players | 10-15 minutes | Any flat area large enough for a standing circle
Materials
- 1-2 hula hoops (or rope loops of similar size)
- Optional: stopwatch for timing rounds
Quick-Run Card
- Group forms a circle holding hands.
- Place a hula hoop over one player’s arm before they rejoin hands.
- Pass the hoop around the circle by stepping through it, without letting go of hands.
- Time the group. Challenge them to beat their own time.
- Add a second hoop going the opposite direction for an extra challenge.
Setup and Boundaries
- Form a circle with enough space for each player to step through the hoop
- Signal: “Go!” to start timing; 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = gather
- Check ground is flat and clear of tripping hazards
How to Play
- The group forms a circle and holds hands.
- Two players briefly release grip. Place a hula hoop over one player’s arm, then rejoin hands.
- The hoop must travel around the entire circle and return to the starting point.
- Players pass the hoop by ducking, stepping through, and shimmying it over their bodies, all without releasing hands.
- Time the first round. Then challenge the group: “Can you beat your own time?”
- Variation: add a second hoop starting from the opposite side, travelling the other direction. Where they meet is the tricky part.
- Rope loop variation: use a loop of rope (hula hoop size) for a different feel.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Full participation in the circle, helping pass the hoop
- S (Support): Be the timekeeper or coach from inside the circle, offering tips
- Q (Quiet): Participate in the circle at your own pace; the hoop comes to you
- O (Observer): Watch and offer strategy suggestions, join the circle when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Arm-pass-only version: instead of stepping through, players pass the hoop from arm to arm for those with mobility limitations
- Seated version: the circle sits in chairs and passes the hoop overhead and around arms
Stewardship Moment
- “We used teamwork to move a hoop. Let’s use that same energy to do a quick 30-second space check.”
- Return hoops to storage after play
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves holding hands in a circle and having a hoop pass over your body. For those not comfortable with hand-holding, you can hold a short rope or bandana between you and the next person.”
- Mid-game check: After the first round, pause. “How did that feel? Everyone good for another round?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Step out and become the timer or coach. Step back into the circle between rounds.
Risks and Mitigation
- Tripping while stepping through: remind players to take their time; it’s not a race against each other
- Hair or clothing caught in hoop: use smooth hoops; players with long hair may want to tie it back
- Pulling on partners’ hands: gentle grip, relax if someone needs a moment
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Circle Squeeze”: holding hands, send a hand-squeeze around the circle as fast as possible
- “Step Through”: practise stepping through a hoop individually before joining the circle
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was the trickiest part of passing the hoop?”
- So What? “What did you figure out as a group that made it faster?”
- Now What? “When do you need a whole team to solve a problem together?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect hula hoops and rope loops
- Return to storage
- Quick space check
