Name and Purpose
- Colour Card Ice Breaker is a first-day activity that helps everyone in a group share a little about themselves in a low-pressure way.
- Players discover what they have in common and practise listening with curiosity.
a.k.a.
- Colour Token Share, Category Pick (generic versions preferred in program materials)
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Seated circle indoors or outdoors
Materials
- Coloured craft tokens, coloured blocks, or folded coloured paper squares (5+ per player)
- A small bowl or bag per group
- A printed or posted category card (e.g., Red = favourite food, Blue = something you are proud of, Green = a place you love, Yellow = a skill or talent, Orange = something you are looking forward to this summer)
- Optional: a whiteboard or posted sign with the colour key
Quick-Run Card
- Show the group the colour categories before passing the bowl.
- Pass the bowl around. Each player picks 1-5 tokens.
- Going around the circle, each player shares one thing about themselves for each token they hold.
- Continue until everyone has shared.
- Celebrate with a round of applause or a group cheer.
Setup and Boundaries
- Post or display the colour category key where everyone can see it
- Signal: one raised hand = pause; two claps = bring attention back
- Arrange seating in a circle so everyone can see each other
How to Play
- Display the colour key so everyone can read the categories.
- Pass the bowl of tokens around the circle. Each player quietly picks 1-5 tokens.
- Once everyone has chosen, go around the circle.
- Each player shares one fact about themselves for each token they hold, matching the colour to the category.
- After sharing, the player passes the bowl to the next person if it has not already gone around.
- Continue until everyone has had a turn.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Pick 5 tokens and share enthusiastically
- S (Support): Ask a kind follow-up question after a teammate shares
- Q (Quiet): Pick 1-2 tokens and share briefly
- O (Observer): Watch the first round and join in when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players may write their answers on a card instead of speaking aloud if preferred
- Use large, clearly labelled tokens or coloured paper squares so colour is easy to see; add a printed label for players with colour-blindness
Stewardship Moment
- Tokens are reusable across many sessions. Collect them carefully at the end.
- Reflection: “We all shared something different today. What did we discover we have in common?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “You will pick a few coloured tokens, and each colour matches a topic. You choose how many to take and what to share about each one. For those not comfortable sharing out loud, writing your answers on a card is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After a few turns, pause. “Everyone good? Thumbs up, sideways, or down.”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may pass any token they do not want to answer. They can re-engage on the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Candy/food allergies or dietary restrictions (original design used edible candy): this version uses craft tokens, removing the food concern entirely
- A player picks many tokens and feels pressure to share too much: remind the group that short answers are perfectly fine
- Colour-blindness making token selection confusing: ensure tokens are labelled with words or symbols in addition to colour
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Name and Colour”: each player says their name and their favourite colour before the activity begins
- “Thumb Check-In”: quick round where everyone shows a thumbs up/sideways/down for how they are feeling today
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was one thing someone shared that surprised you or that you have in common with them?”
- So What? “How does knowing these things about each other change how you feel about being in this group?”
- Now What? “Is there one person you want to learn even more about this week? How could you make that happen?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all tokens and return them to the storage bag for next use
- Remove or store the category key card
