Name and Purpose
- The Big Wind Blows is a lively movement and connection activity that reveals what participants share.
- Players practise quick thinking, spatial awareness, and inclusive categorisation.
a.k.a.
- Fruit Salad, Bingo Blower, Category Scramble
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players | 10-20 minutes | Large indoor gym or outdoor flat space with a clear circle layout
Materials
- One spot marker per participant, minus one (shoes set aside, cones, hula hoops, or carpet squares all work)
- Flat, even ground free of obstacles
Quick-Run Card
- Arrange spot markers in a circle, one fewer than the number of players.
- One player starts in the middle as the Wind Caller.
- The Wind Caller says “The Big Wind Blows for anyone who…” and names a category.
- Everyone who fits that category runs to a new spot; they cannot return to their own spot or move to the immediately adjacent spot.
- The player left without a spot becomes the next Wind Caller.
Setup and Boundaries
- Lay out spot markers in a circle large enough that players have room to move safely between spots
- Signal: 1 whistle = freeze; 2 whistles = gather in
- Check the ground for wet patches, loose gravel, or uneven surfaces before play
- If outdoors, note sun position and ensure no one is running directly into glare
How to Play
- Staff sets out spot markers in a circle, one fewer than the number of players.
- One volunteer (or staff member) starts as the Wind Caller in the centre.
- The Wind Caller says “The Big Wind Blows for anyone who [has a pet / is wearing blue / loves pizza / has a summer birthday].”
- Everyone who fits the category leaves their spot and finds a new one. They cannot return to their own spot and cannot step to the spot immediately beside theirs.
- The Wind Caller also tries to claim a spot.
- The one player left without a spot becomes the next Wind Caller.
- If a player is left in the middle multiple times, staff can quietly offer a category suggestion or invite them to step out for a round and back in fresh.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Sprint to a new spot; call creative, energetic categories
- S (Support): Move at a walking pace; hold a spot open for a friend who needs a moment
- Q (Quiet): Walk to any open spot; choose calm, gentle categories when it is your turn to call
- O (Observer): Watch from just outside the circle; step in to claim a spot whenever ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Participants who use mobility aids or prefer not to run can walk to any open spot; the same rules apply and walking is equally valid
- If being the Wind Caller feels stressful, a participant can pass their turn to a volunteer or have staff call alongside them
Stewardship Moment
- Spot markers (cones, hoops, squares) are reused each session; collect and store them carefully after play
- Reflection: “The wind moved everyone around. What did you discover about someone you didn’t expect?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “We’ll be moving quickly between spots. For those not comfortable running, walking works just as well and counts fully. For those not comfortable being the caller in the middle, there’s always an option to pass.”
- Mid-game check: After 5 minutes, staff pauses play briefly: “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is everyone feeling?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Participants can step just outside the circle and step back in to claim a spot whenever they are ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collisions when multiple players rush for the same spot: reinforce “walk the last two steps” as a house rule
- Same player stuck in the middle repeatedly: staff quietly suggests a broad category that will move many players, or offers to be Wind Caller for one round
- Categories that exclude or embarrass: staff models inclusive, lighthearted categories at the start and redirects any that miss the mark
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Shake and Move”: walk randomly around the space; on a signal, freeze and greet the nearest person
- “Category Shout”: staff calls a category and players simply raise their hand if it applies, no movement yet, to warm up the idea
Debrief Questions
- What? “What category made the most people move? What surprised you about that?”
- So What? “What did you learn about someone in this group that you didn’t know before?”
- Now What? “How can noticing what we share help us work better as a group this week?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all spot markers and return them to storage
- Check the play space for any items left behind
