Name and Purpose
- Fifty Yard Scream is a joyful, low-stakes energy release that gets players moving and laughing together.
- Players practise breath control, running, and cheering each other on in a non-competitive personal challenge.
a.k.a.
- Big Breath Sprint, Loud Run
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players | 5-10 minutes | Large open outdoor field, minimum 50 metres long
Materials
- 4 cones (2 for the start line; optional distance markers every 10m)
- A whistle
- Open flat ground with no obstacles
Quick-Run Card
- Mark a start line with cones. Optional: set distance cones at 10m intervals.
- Everyone lines up. On “Go,” run and shout for as long as one breath lasts, then stop.
- Players note or remember where they stopped.
- Return to start. Try to beat the distance on the next run.
- Close with a group cheer, no rankings.
Setup and Boundaries
- Sweep the field for holes, stones, or debris before play.
- Signal: 1 whistle = go; 2 whistles = everyone stop and return.
- Make sure the field has at least 50 metres of clear run; ensure players run away from fences, walls, or water.
- Sun awareness: if running in direct sun, keep rounds short and offer water nearby.
- Staff should be aware of any respiratory sensitivities in the group.
How to Play
- Everyone lines up on the start line with a little space between each person.
- The leader counts down: “3, 2, 1, Go!”
- On “Go,” everyone runs forward and shouts on one breath for as long as they can. When the breath runs out, stop right there.
- Each player notes their spot (a nearby cone or a foot marker in the grass).
- Walk back to the start. Take a breath. Try to beat your distance in the next round.
- Play 3-5 rounds. Encourage players to cheer each other’s distances, not compare.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Full sprint with a full-volume shout.
- S (Support): Jog and cheer; focus on encouraging teammates during the run.
- Q (Quiet): Walk briskly and hum or blow air instead of shouting.
- O (Observer): Stand at the sideline and mark where players stop; call out encouraging distances.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who use mobility aids: roll or walk as far as one breath allows. The spirit of the activity is breath plus movement, not speed.
- Players with voice sensitivities: blowing a long sustained breath (like blowing out birthday candles) counts the same as a shout. Staff will know which campers need this option.
Stewardship Moment
- No materials to collect except cones.
- Reflection: “What did it feel like to just let go and shout? Where else do you give yourself permission to do that?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game is about running and making noise on one breath. For those not comfortable with shouting, humming or blowing air is another option. Both count exactly the same.”
- Mid-game check: After round 1, check in. “How is everyone doing? Give me a thumbs.”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players can step to the sideline at any time. Re-enter at the start line before the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Light-headedness from hyperventilation: remind players this is one normal breath in and then out while running. No forced deep breathing beforehand.
- Tripping at speed: clear the field before play; no running toward hard surfaces.
- Collision if players veer sideways: leave at least 1-2 metres between runners on the start line.
- Heat: keep rounds short in hot weather; offer water access between rounds.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Shake It Out”: everyone shakes arms, legs, and neck for 30 seconds, then takes one big breath together.
- “Breath Walk”: walk slowly across the field, breathing in for 4 steps, out for 4 steps.
Debrief Questions
- What? “Did your distance change between rounds? What felt different?”
- So What? “What do you notice about how your body feels after releasing a lot of energy at once?”
- Now What? “When is a healthy way to release big energy something you might use off the field?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all cones.
- 30-second field check.
- Offer water before moving to the next activity.
