- Ages 8-16 | 6-30 players | 10-15 minutes | Seated circle, indoor or outdoor
Materials
- No materials required
- Optional: a talking piece to signal whose turn it is to ask a question
Quick-Run Card
- Players sit in a circle with one player in the centre as the Word Keeper.
- The Word Keeper chooses a funny word (or the group suggests one).
- Players take turns asking the Word Keeper any question they like.
- The Word Keeper must answer every question with only their chosen word, without smiling or laughing.
- The first player to break the Word Keeper’s composure takes a turn in the centre.
Setup and Boundaries
- Seated circle with clear sightlines to the centre player.
- Signal: one raised hand from the leader means pause; one clap means reset for a new Word Keeper.
- Keep the tone kind: questions should be funny, not embarrassing or pointed at anyone personally.
How to Play
- The group sits in a circle. One volunteer starts as the Word Keeper.
- The Word Keeper chooses a funny, silly word (examples: sausage, bumblebee, noodle, potato).
- Players take turns asking the Word Keeper open-ended questions about anything they like.
- The Word Keeper must answer every single question with only their chosen word, delivered with a straight face.
- The first player whose question causes the Word Keeper to smile or laugh becomes the next Word Keeper.
- If no one cracks the Word Keeper in two minutes, celebrate their composure and invite a new volunteer to take the centre.
- Multiple rounds are encouraged. No one has to take the centre if they do not want to.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Take the centre as the Word Keeper; ask creative and funny questions from the circle.
- S (Support): Encourage quieter players to ask questions; cheer warmly when the Word Keeper holds it together.
- Q (Quiet): Participate by listening and smiling; ask a simple question when ready.
- O (Observer): Watch and enjoy from the edge of the circle; join in when you feel like it.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who do not want the centre role are never pressured; the leader can model the role first.
- Questions can be whispered to a neighbour who voices them, supporting players who are not comfortable speaking aloud to the group.
Stewardship Moment
- No materials to clean up.
- Reflection: “The Word Keeper had to stay calm while everyone tried to throw them off. When do you need that kind of calm in real life?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “One person sits in the centre and answers every question with the same funny word. For those who would rather stay in the circle and ask questions, that is a great role. No one has to take the centre unless they want to.”
- Mid-game check: After the first Word Keeper, pause briefly. “Everyone feeling good? Thumbs up, sideways, or down.”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player may step back from asking questions any time. Raise a hand to signal you would like a turn in the centre.
Risks and Mitigation
- Questions becoming unkind or targeting a player personally: leader redirects gently; no one is singled out.
- The centre role feeling too exposed for some players: make it clear the role is always voluntary and the leader can go first.
- Same one or two players always taking the centre: encourage new volunteers and celebrate first-timers.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Funny Face Chain”: each player makes a funny face and the next player copies it, then adds their own.
- “Three Truths, No Lies”: each player shares three surprising truths about themselves.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was the hardest part of keeping a straight face?”
- So What? “What helped the Word Keeper stay calm under pressure?”
- Now What? “When do you need that same composure in real life?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect any talking piece.
- Return seating to its original arrangement.
