Name and Purpose
- Four on the Couch is a seated strategy game that builds name recognition and creative thinking.
- Players practise memory, quick decision-making, and reading group patterns.
a.k.a.
- Couch Game, Sofa Swap
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 15-25 minutes | Indoor room with chairs in a circle
Materials
- One chair per player, plus one empty chair
- Slips of paper (one per player)
- Pens or pencils
- Hat or bowl for drawing
Quick-Run Card
- Arrange chairs in a circle. Designate 4 chairs as “the couch.” Include one empty chair.
- Each player writes their name on a slip, puts it in the hat, and draws a different slip.
- Start with a mixed group on the couch (not all one team).
- The player to the right of the empty chair calls a name. Whoever holds that name slip moves to the empty chair. Those two swap slips.
- Continue until one group fills all four couch seats.
Setup and Boundaries
- Arrange all chairs in a circle, seats facing inward.
- Clearly mark or label the 4 couch seats before play begins.
- Signal: raise your hand to pause play; say “Reset” if a rule question comes up.
- Ensure pathways between chairs are clear for safe movement.
How to Play
- Each player writes their own name on a slip of paper, drops it in the hat, and draws a different name randomly.
- Everyone sits down. The player to the right of the empty chair calls out any name.
- The player currently holding that name on their slip moves to the empty chair.
- Those two players swap slips with each other.
- The player now sitting to the right of the new empty chair calls the next name. They may not repeat the name just called.
- Teams try to get all four of their group onto the couch. The round ends when that happens.
I-OPt Options
- Start: A (play actively, strategise which name to call) | S (help a newer player understand the slip-swap rule) | Q (sit quietly and observe one full round before joining) | O (watch from outside the circle for one round, then take a seat)
- Mid: A (call names strategically to block the other team) | S (quietly encourage a teammate) | Q (hold your slip and move only when called) | O (step back and watch if feeling overwhelmed, re-enter next round)
- Late: A (push to complete your team’s couch) | S (cheer on teammates moving to the couch) | Q (follow the action at your own pace) | O (count moves aloud for the group if preferred)
- End: A (celebrate the winning moment) | S (help collect slips for reset) | Q (sit quietly while debrief begins) | O (listen to debrief from your seat)
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who have difficulty reading can use pictures or symbols on their slips instead of names.
- A staff member can hold and read slips aloud for any player who needs support.
Stewardship Moment
- Collect all slips and the hat at the end. Store or reuse for future rounds.
- Reflection: “We used just paper and chairs for this game. What could we use these materials for next?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves moving between seats and holding a slip of paper with someone else’s name on it. If you would prefer to start by watching one round, that seat right there is saved for you.”
- For those not comfortable with any part of this activity, sitting out or joining as an observer is another option.
- Mid-game check: After one round, pause. “Quick check-in: thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is everyone feeling? Anyone want to switch roles?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step to the side at any point. Call “Back in” to take the next available empty chair.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players rushing between chairs: remind everyone to walk, not run, between seats.
- Confusion about slip-swapping rule: staff should model the swap clearly before play begins.
- Gender-based team language in the original (“four guys or four girls”): replaced with team colours or seat labels (e.g., “red team” and “blue team”) to be inclusive of all players.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Stand If…”: players stand briefly if a statement applies to them (e.g., “Stand if you have a pet”). Good for reading the room before seated play.
- Quick name-round: go around the circle, each player says their name once before slips are drawn.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What did you notice about how the slips changed hands during the game?”
- So What? “How did knowing someone’s name change how you played?”
- Now What? “Where else in camp life does knowing someone’s name help things go more smoothly?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all slips of paper and return to the hat for reuse.
- Stack or return chairs to their original positions.
- 60-second sweep: check the floor for dropped slips.
