Name and Purpose
- Mixed-Up Name Toss reinforces name recognition by adding a spatial challenge to a familiar pattern.
- Players practise memory, focus, and adapting quickly when their environment changes.
a.k.a.
- Scrambled Name Pass, Name Chaos
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-25 players | 10-20 minutes | Open indoor or outdoor space with room for a circle
Materials
- One soft tossable object: foam ball, beanbag, or knotted cloth
- Optional: cones to mark circle spots
Quick-Run Card
- Form a circle and complete one full Name Toss pattern (each person says a name and tosses to that person until everyone has received once).
- Tell the group they have five seconds to move to a different spot in the circle.
- Players scramble to new positions.
- The group must now repeat the exact same name pattern, tossing to the same people as before, even though everyone is standing somewhere new.
- Scramble and repeat as many times as the group enjoys.
Setup and Boundaries
- Clear a wide open circle area before starting.
- Signal: one raised hand = pause; two claps = everyone freeze.
- Check the ground for hazards before play.
- Outdoor play: be aware of wind, wet ground, or uneven surfaces.
How to Play
- Form a circle. Everyone stands with a little space between them.
- Complete one standard Name Toss: Player A says someone’s name and tosses to them. That person says another name and tosses. Continue until everyone has received the ball once. Remember the pattern.
- Call out: “Scramble! You have five seconds to move to a new spot.”
- Players quickly move to different positions in the circle.
- Now the group repeats the same name-toss pattern as before, sending the ball to the same people in the same order, even though everyone is standing in new spots.
- Keep scrambling and repeating. The group gets faster and more confident with each round.
I-OPt Options
- Start: A (jump into the circle and get a spot) | S (help remind quieter players what the pattern was) | Q (choose a spot on the edge of the circle with a little more space) | O (watch the first full pattern before joining)
- Mid: A (scramble quickly and call names confidently) | S (quietly prompt a player who forgets whose turn it is) | Q (move calmly to a new spot and follow the pattern) | O (step back briefly if overwhelmed; re-enter on the next scramble)
- Late: A (try to complete the pattern without any mistakes) | S (encourage the group when they get the pattern right) | Q (keep your pace comfortable and steady) | O (count how many scrambles the group completes without an error)
- End: A (lead one final scramble) | S (collect the ball and bring the group in for debrief) | Q (sit comfortably for the debrief) | O (share one name you remembered during the activity)
Inclusion Adaptations
- For players with limited mobility, they may stay in one spot during scrambles and the pattern comes to them in the same sequence.
- For players with visual impairments, pair them with a support player who can give a verbal cue before the toss arrives.
Stewardship Moment
- Keep the ball in good condition. A foam ball can last years with care.
- Reflection: “We played a whole game with one ball. How can we take care of our equipment so it lasts all summer?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves catching and tossing a soft ball. For those who prefer not to catch, you can pass the ball underhand or hand it directly to the next person in the pattern. Both are equally great.”
- Mid-game check: After one scramble, pause. “How is everyone feeling? Ready for another scramble, or want to slow it down?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step back during a scramble. They re-enter at the next scramble by stepping into any open spot.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players bumping into each other during the scramble: remind everyone to walk, not run, when finding new spots.
- Ball dropped repeatedly: slow the pattern down. Focus on the name-calling, not the speed.
- Someone consistently left out of the pattern: staff track the pattern and gently correct any skips.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Basic Name Toss (no scramble): complete one full clean round first so everyone knows the pattern before scrambling.
- “Name echo”: staff says a name, the whole group repeats it. Quick way to refresh names before play.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was harder: remembering the pattern or finding your new spot?”
- So What? “What did you notice about how your brain adapted when things changed?”
- Now What? “Can you think of a time at camp when you had to follow a routine even when your surroundings changed?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect the ball and store it with game equipment.
- 60-second sweep: check the space for any items left behind.
