Name and Purpose
- Name Bop tests name recall in a playful, fast-paced circle game.
- Players sharpen memory and quick thinking while laughing together.
a.k.a.
- Sock Bop, Name and Dodge
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-25 players | 10-20 minutes | Indoor or outdoor space with room for a seated or standing circle
Materials
- One soft bopping object: long sock with a balled-up sock inside, or a short foam noodle
- Flat, clear space for the circle
Quick-Run Card
- Group sits in a circle. One player is the Bopper and stands in the middle.
- Staff calls out a name from the circle.
- That player must say their own name and then the name of another player before the Bopper can tap them lightly on the leg.
- If they succeed, the Bopper stays in the middle.
- If tapped first, they become the new Bopper.
Setup and Boundaries
- Seat the group in a clear circle with the Bopper standing in the centre.
- Signal: staff raises their hand = pause play; any player can call “pause” at any time.
- The bop must be a light tap on the leg only. Staff model this before play begins.
- Check the ground for obstacles before starting.
How to Play
- Everyone sits in a circle. One player volunteers to be the Bopper and stands in the middle holding the soft object.
- Staff calls out the name of someone in the circle.
- That player must quickly say their own name and then the name of someone else in the circle, before the Bopper can tap them lightly on the leg.
- If the player says both names before being tapped, the Bopper stays in the middle and staff calls a new name.
- If the Bopper taps them before they finish both names, that player becomes the new Bopper.
- Staff may change the Bopper at any time to keep the game moving and fun.
- No player is ever sitting out. Everyone in the circle is always part of the action.
I-OPt Options
- Start: A (volunteer to be the first Bopper) | S (sit near someone who might need a quiet name-prompt and be ready to help) | Q (choose a seat in the circle and watch a few rounds before being called) | O (watch from just outside the circle, join when ready)
- Mid: A (be quick and energetic when your name is called) | S (cheer on players who get their names right) | Q (respond calmly and at your own pace when called) | O (step back briefly if needed; re-enter the circle for the next round)
- Late: A (push for speed on the name recall) | S (quietly prompt anyone who looks stuck) | Q (keep your energy level comfortable) | O (count how many successful name-calls happen in a row)
- End: A (take a final turn as Bopper if you want) | S (help collect the soft object and bring the group in) | Q (sit comfortably for the debrief) | O (share one name you learned during the game)
Inclusion Adaptations
- For players with slower verbal processing, staff can count to five before the Bopper is allowed to tap, giving more time to respond.
- For players with mobility or hearing differences, the bop can be replaced with a raised-hand signal from the Bopper, and staff can use a visual cue to call names.
Stewardship Moment
- The sock object can be washed and reused many times. Store it with game supplies after play.
- Reflection: “We just played a whole name game with one old sock. What else could we repurpose into something useful?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves a light tap on the leg from a soft sock. For those who prefer not to be touched at all, you can play a version where the Bopper raises the sock above your head instead of tapping. Both versions count.”
- Mid-game check: After 3-4 rounds, pause. “How is everyone feeling? Is the tapping okay, or does anyone want to switch to the raised-sock version?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step out of the circle to observe. Call “Back in” to rejoin at the next name-call.
Risks and Mitigation
- Bopper tapping too hard: staff model a light tap before play and remind throughout. Swap the Bopper if the tapping is too enthusiastic.
- Player blanks on a name: staff can offer a quiet prompt. No shame needed.
- Players feeling singled out when called: normalise errors by celebrating the attempt, not just the correct answer.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Quick name-round: everyone says their name once around the circle before play begins.
- “Clap the name”: staff claps the syllables of a player’s name, and the group guesses who it is.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when your name was called? What did you feel?”
- So What? “How did knowing other people’s names help you play?”
- Now What? “What is one way you can practise remembering names at camp this week?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Store the soft object with game supplies.
- Check the circle area for any items left behind.
