Name and Purpose
- Name Line builds name recognition through repetition and a growing memory challenge.
- Players feel seen and remembered as their name and detail are echoed by the whole group.
a.k.a.
- Name Chain, Remember Everyone
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-20 players | 10-20 minutes | Any indoor or outdoor space with room for a line or circle
Materials
- No materials required
Quick-Run Card
- Stand in a line or circle.
- Player 1 says their name and a favourite thing.
- Player 2 says their name and favourite thing, then repeats Player 1’s.
- Each player adds their own and repeats all previous players.
- The last player completes the full chain. The group celebrates together.
Setup and Boundaries
- Arrange the group in a line or circle with comfortable spacing.
- Signal: staff raises a hand = pause and listen.
- No equipment needed. Works in almost any space.
How to Play
- Everyone stands in a line or sits in a circle.
- Player 1 says their name and one favourite thing (e.g., “My name is Maya and I love pizza”).
- Player 2 says their own name and favourite thing, then repeats Player 1’s (“I am Leo and I love swimming. Maya loves pizza”).
- Each new player adds themselves at the beginning and then repeats everyone before them in order.
- The last player completes the full chain from their name back to Player 1.
- The whole group cheers after the last player finishes.
- Staff note: for younger players or larger groups, focus on names only, without the favourite thing, to keep it manageable.
I-OPt Options
- Start: A (volunteer to go first or second so the chain is short) | S (help the group cheer and encourage each player as they go) | Q (choose a spot near the middle where the chain is moderate in length) | O (watch the first few players before taking your spot in the line)
- Mid: A (try to remember the whole chain as it grows) | S (quietly prompt a player who gets stuck) | Q (focus on the names closest to you in the chain) | O (step to the side if the group grows too large; rejoin at the end)
- Late: A (take on one of the later spots with a longer chain to recall) | S (help the final player by nodding or gesturing to the right person) | Q (listen and echo softly along with each player) | O (count how many names you can remember silently)
- End: A (try to recite the full chain yourself after the last player) | S (lead the group cheer when the final player finishes) | Q (applaud and join the debrief) | O (share one name you will definitely remember)
Inclusion Adaptations
- For players with memory challenges, they can choose to say only their name (no favourite thing) and are equally celebrated.
- For larger groups, split into two shorter chains of 8-10 players each so no one is overwhelmed.
Stewardship Moment
- No materials, no waste, no cleanup. This game runs entirely on human memory and attention.
- Reflection: “What does it feel like to have someone remember your name and what you love?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “You will share your name and one favourite thing. If you would prefer to share just your name, that is completely fine. You can also pass and return at the end of the round.”
- Mid-game check: About halfway through, pause. “How is everyone feeling? Thumbs up, sideways, or down. Want to keep the chain going?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step out and re-enter at the end of the chain on the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Player feels embarrassed about forgetting: staff normalise forgetting by saying “That happens to everyone. Let’s help them out.” Group gives a gentle prompt together.
- Original version allowed elimination for mistakes: removed entirely. All players stay in. Group support replaces competition.
- Large group overwhelm: use two parallel chains of 8-10 players.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “One favourite thing”: go around quickly and each player just says one favourite thing, no names yet. Gets the sharing feeling going.
- “Name echo”: staff says a name, the group echoes it. Quick and warm before the game begins.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was hardest: remembering names, or remembering the favourite things?”
- So What? “What does it feel like when someone remembers something personal about you?”
- Now What? “What is one detail you learned about someone today that you will try to remember tomorrow?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No cleanup needed.
- Optional: do a quick name-round to close, each player says the name of the person to their left.
