Name & Purpose Tub Turn is a coordination and communication challenge. The group sits in a circle around a water-filled tub, lifts it together with their feet, and completes tasks without spilling the water. It demands synchronized movement, clear communication, and shared responsibility for a messy consequence.
a.k.a. Wash Tub Spin; Floating Circle; The Trough Turn
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16. Groups of 8β16 (the circle must fit comfortably around the tub). Allow 15β25 minutes. Needs a flat outdoor area or gym floor. Place a tarp under and around the tub β water will spill.
Materials
- 1 large metal wash tub or farm-style water trough (old-fashioned style works well)
- Water, enough to fill to 3β4 inches depth
- Tarp or groundsheet (to sit on and under the tub β protects the ground and participants)
- 1 towel per participant (or a stack of towels nearby)
- Dry change of socks/shoes recommended for participants if running outdoors
Quick-Run Card
- Fill tub with 3β4 inches of water. Set on tarp.
- Group sits in a circle around the tub, knees bent, feet placed on the rim or side of the tub.
- Group lifts the tub together using only their feet and legs.
- Task A: while holding the tub up, remove one shoe and pass it around the circle.
- Task B: while holding the tub, rotate it 180 or 360 degrees as a group.
- Tasks can be done in sequence or simultaneously depending on group skill level.
- Debrief.
Setup & Boundaries
- Lay the tarp flat before filling the tub. The tub sits in the center of the tarp. The tarp extends out far enough for all participants to sit on it.
- Fill the tub on-site β do not carry a full tub. Fill with a hose or buckets.
- Each participant sits on the tarp, facing the tub, with knees bent and feet on the rim or side of the tub.
- No participant stands or kneels during the lift β seated only.
- Water will spill. Brief the group and accept it. The facilitator does not penalize spills β spills are information, not failures.
- Do not use a tarp under the group for the shoe-passing task if the group is young or if the tarp is slippery when wet β use towels instead as a seated layer.
How to Play Brief the group: “You are going to lift this tub together β using only your feet. Once it’s up, you have two tasks: pass a shoe around the circle, and rotate the tub. You cannot put the tub down until both tasks are done. Coordinate everything with your voice.”
Everyone gets seated, feet on the tub. On a count of three, the group lifts. Facilitator confirms all feet are engaged before counting.
Task A: One participant removes one shoe (the rest keep their feet on the tub). The shoe is passed around the circle β hand to hand β while the tub stays lifted.
Task B: The group rotates the tub β 180 degrees or a full 360 degrees β by coordinating their leg movements. The facilitator can call the direction.
The group chooses when to lower the tub. Celebrate when both tasks are done.
Repeat if the group wants a second round β try both tasks simultaneously.
I-OPt Roles Three simultaneous roles:
- Caller (Performer) β counts out, calls rhythm, gives cues for the lift and the rotation. High energy. Emerges naturally.
- Stabilizer (Implementer) β focuses on maintaining steady foot contact during the tasks. Does not call out; just holds steady.
- Adjuster (Analyst) β notices when the tub tilts and calls out corrections. “Left side, push in.” Keeps the tub level.
- Shoe Passer (optional rotation) β whoever passes the shoe is briefly managing a physical coordination task on top of the foot balance challenge. Rotate this role so different people experience it.
No elimination. If the tub is lowered mid-task, the group resets and tries again.
Inclusion Supports
- Participants who cannot sit cross-legged or with knees bent: adjust their seating β a low stool or folded towel can raise their seated height so their feet can still reach the tub.
- Participants with foot or ankle limitations: they can place a hand on the tub rim instead of feet, if safe and stable.
- Participants who prefer not to remove a shoe: they can be the Caller or Adjuster and not participate in the shoe-pass task.
- The facilitator monitors all seated positions before the lift. Confirm everyone is stable before counting.
Stewardship Action: After the activity, empty the tub (tip carefully, not near walkways), rinse it, and return it to storage. Wring out the tarp and hang to dry. Collect towels.
30-second reflection: “The water kept spilling when you were out of sync. Think of something in your group or cabin where everyone needs to move at the same pace. What happens when even one person is out of sync?” Pause 30 seconds.
Consent Pre-brief: “This activity involves sitting close together in a circle and getting wet feet and potentially wet clothes. If getting wet is a problem today β for any reason β tell me now. We will find you a different role or an observer seat.”
Also brief the shoe task: “We will be passing a shoe around. If removing your shoe is uncomfortable for any reason, tell me and you can be the Caller instead.”
Mid-game check-in: After the lift, scan the circle: “Everyone stable? Give me a thumbs up before we start the task.”
Opt-out/re-entry: Any participant can set their feet down and become the Caller at any time. The group lowers the tub, adjusts, and relaunches when ready.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Participant slips on wet tarp | Medium | Use a non-slip tarp or place towels for seating; brief slow movement when getting up or sitting down |
| Tub falls on participant | Low | Group stays seated during lift β tub height is low; facilitator confirms stability before count |
| Foot or ankle strain from lifting | Low | Brief: use leg strength, not ankle flex; if a foot is uncomfortable, lower and reset |
| Water soaks clothing | High | Brief this before starting; offer observer role; run outdoors or in a space where wet clothes are acceptable |
| Metal tub edge cuts or pinches | Low | Inspect tub rim before activity; sand or tape any sharp edges |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Synchronized Clap (2 min): Group sits in a circle. One person claps a rhythm. The whole group copies it in unison. Builds the synchronized coordination needed for the lift.
- Foot Shake (1 min): Everyone shakes out their feet and ankles. Simple warmup for the muscles used in the lift.
Debrief What?
- When did the water spill most? What was happening in the group at that moment?
- How did your group communicate during the lift? What worked?
So what?
- What does synchronized movement require from a group?
- Where in team or cabin life do things “spill” when people are out of sync?
Now what?
- Name one moment today where you had to adjust to someone else’s pace. How did that feel?
- What is one thing your group can do to get better at moving in sync?
Cleanup & Reset
- Lower and tip the tub to empty water away from the activity area.
- Rinse tub if needed.
- Wring out or hang tarp to dry.
- Collect and stack towels.
- Reset time: 5β7 minutes.
