Name and Purpose
- Seven-Nine-Six is a voice-recognition circle game that brings out laughter and builds attentiveness.
- Players sharpen listening skills and enjoy the playful challenge of disguising their voice.
a.k.a.
- 796, Voice Guess
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-25 players | 10-15 minutes | Seated circle; indoors or outdoors, any flat surface
Materials
- None required
- Optional: bandana or soft blindfold for the centre player
Quick-Run Card
- One player sits or stands in the middle with eyes closed.
- They call “Seven! Nine! Six!”
- One player in the circle replies “Seven-Nine-Six” in any voice they like.
- The middle player points to who they think spoke. Up to 3 guesses allowed.
- A correct guess swaps roles. An incorrect guess after 3 tries means a new volunteer takes the middle.
Setup and Boundaries
- Seat the group in a clear circle with the centre player at least 1 metre from everyone else.
- Signal: facilitator says “Pause” to reset or redirect.
- Eyes must stay genuinely closed; a light bandana helps if needed.
- No touching the centre player.
How to Play
- One volunteer (or staff member for the first round) sits in the middle with eyes closed.
- They say clearly: “Seven! Nine! Six!”
- The facilitator silently points to one circle player who then responds: “Seven-Nine-Six.” That player may use any voice: high, low, whispered, funny.
- The middle player has up to 3 guesses, pointing toward who they think spoke.
- Correct guess: the identified player takes the middle for the next round.
- Three incorrect guesses: the middle player opens their eyes to a round of applause, and a new volunteer steps in.
I-OPt Options
- Start: A (Active) – volunteer to go in the middle first. S (Support) – help keep the circle calm and quiet between turns. Q (Quiet) – sit in the circle and respond when pointed to. O (Observer) – watch the first round before deciding to join.
- Mid: A – try an outlandish voice when it is your turn to respond. S – encourage the middle player with quiet gestures. Q – respond with a soft voice. O – keep watching; join when ready.
- Late: A – take the middle with confidence. S – celebrate good guesses and close calls. Q – enjoy the laughter without pressure. O – try one round as a responder from the circle.
- End: A – celebrate the best voice disguise of the session. S – help wrap up and thank players. Q – share one thing they enjoyed about the game. O – decide whether to join a final round.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who are non-verbal or prefer not to speak may tap a rhythm instead of saying the numbers; the middle player guesses by the tap pattern.
- Players with visual impairments in the middle role may use a soft tap on their shoulder from the facilitator as the cue to guess direction, rather than pointing.
Stewardship Moment
- No materials, no footprint.
- Reflection: “This game asked you to really listen. How often do you listen that carefully in everyday conversation?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves sitting in the middle of the circle with eyes closed and listening carefully. For those not comfortable in the middle, responding from the circle is just as fun. You will never be put in the middle without choosing to be there.”
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, quick check. “Everyone still having fun? Thumbs up, sideways, or down.”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may stay in the circle as responders only. A player may step into the middle at any time by raising their hand.
Risks and Mitigation
- Cheating by peeking: a light bandana or having the player face away from the circle helps.
- Feeling embarrassed in the middle: frame 3 wrong guesses as a win for the disguisers, not a loss for the guesser.
- Loud voices startling the middle player: remind responders that the goal is disguise, not volume.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Voice Warm-Up”: each player says their name in three different voices (high, low, whispered).
- “Echo Circle”: one player makes a sound; the circle echoes it back in unison.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What made some voices harder to identify than others?”
- So What? “What does this game tell us about how well we actually know each other’s voices?”
- Now What? “How could listening more carefully change how you connect with people at camp?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return bandana to the kit if used.
- No other cleanup needed.
