Name & Purpose Know Your Crew is a mobile icebreaker where players predict each other’s answers to spun questions, then compare. It sparks conversation, reveals surprises, and builds connection β ideal for new groups, long bus rides, or cabin icebreakers.
a.k.a. Crew Quiz, Predict Your People
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16. 3β10 players per device (small groups work best β everyone must be able to see the screen). 15β30 minutes. Anywhere β indoors, outdoors, on a bus, or during a cabin wind-down. No large space required.
Materials
- One smartphone per group with the Know Your Crew app installed.
- A stable internet connection (or confirm the app works offline before the session).
- Optional paper-and-pen backup: print 10β15 sample questions from the app’s question set and run the game verbally if tech fails.
Quick-Run Card
- Open Know Your Crew on the device and create a group session.
- Pass the phone around so each player joins or is added.
- One player spins the question wheel β the question appears on screen.
- Each player privately records their prediction of how each other player will answer.
- Answers are revealed β compare, react, discuss.
- Rotate who spins. Repeat for as many rounds as time allows.
Setup & Boundaries
- Download and test the app before the session β do not assume wifi is available at camp.
- Set group expectations before starting: “Answers stay in this group β we don’t screenshot or share outside.”
- Brief the group that questions can be personal β anyone can pass on a question with no explanation needed.
- For groups without smartphones or with phone-free policies: use the paper-and-pen version (see Materials above).
- Keep groups to 10 or fewer so every player knows every other player well enough for predictions to be meaningful.
How to Play
- Create a session in the app and add all players.
- The player who starts spins the question wheel. A question appears (e.g., “What is your go-to comfort food?” or “If you could have any superpower, what would you choose?”).
- Each player looks at the question and privately thinks (or types) how each other player will answer.
- All players reveal their own actual answers.
- Players share their predictions β “I thought you’d say pizza!” β and discuss the surprises.
- Score points for correct predictions (app tracks this) or play unscored for pure conversation.
- Rotate who spins the wheel. Continue for as many rounds as the group enjoys.
I-OPt Roles Every player is active every round β multiple simultaneous roles:
- Spinner (Initiator): Chooses when to spin, keeps the energy up, reads the question aloud clearly.
- Predictor (Analyst): Every player thinks about what they know β or think they know β about their crewmates.
- Revealer (Storyteller): When revealing their answer, players add one sentence of context β “I said pizza because…” β which deepens the conversation beyond the surface answer.
- Connector (Relater): Notices when an answer surprises them positively β “I didn’t know you were into that β tell me more!” β and opens the conversation wider.
- Roles rotate naturally with each question.
Inclusion Supports
- Players who do not want to answer a question pass β no explanation needed, no pressure.
- Players who prefer not to use a smartphone can receive questions read aloud and respond verbally.
- For groups with varied reading levels: the Spinner reads every question aloud before anyone responds.
- If running the paper-and-pen version: questions can be pre-selected by the leader to avoid any that are too personal for the group’s stage of trust.
- The app is available in multiple languages β check the settings for groups with mixed first languages.
Stewardship No physical materials to collect in the app version. If using paper: collect and shred or recycle the paper slips. Leader prompt: “Think of one answer someone gave today that surprised you. What did it tell you about them that you didn’t know before?” (30 seconds quiet, then share.)
Consent
- Pre-brief: “All answers stay in this group. If a question feels too personal, you can pass β just say ‘Pass’ and we move to the next person. No questions asked.”
- Mid-game check-in: If a question lands awkwardly (visible discomfort from anyone), the leader says “We’ll skip this one” and spins again immediately.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player steps out of a round by saying “Pass.” They stay in the group and rejoin whenever they are ready.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| A question feels too personal or triggering | Medium | Brief the pass option clearly; leader spins again without commentary if anyone is uncomfortable |
| Tech failure β app crashes or no wifi | Medium | Have the paper-and-pen backup ready; test the app before the session |
| Players screenshotting and sharing answers outside the group | LowβMedium | Set a clear group expectation before starting; camp phone policies reinforce this |
| One player dominating the conversation | LowβMedium | Leader gently ensures all players get equal time to share predictions |
| Group not engaging (flat energy) | Low | Start with a silly, low-stakes question to warm up before deeper ones |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Two truths and a lie” before starting: a classic that primes the “predicting each other” mindset.
- Ask the group: “What’s one thing you think your crewmates already know about you? What’s one thing they don’t know?” β sets up the game’s core dynamic.
- Leader goes first: answer one practice question yourself to model vulnerability and openness.
Debrief
- What? “What question surprised you the most? Whose answer was furthest from what you expected?”
- So what? “What does it mean that we can be close to someone but still not know these things about them?”
- Now what? “What’s one thing you learned about a crewmate today that you want to follow up on this week?”
Cleanup & Reset Close the app session. Collect and recycle any paper used. Reset takes under 1 minute.
