Name & Purpose Speed Pass is a fast, simple problem-solving challenge. Every person in the group must physically touch the ball β in the shortest time possible. Groups discover that the obvious solution (a chain pass) is rarely the fastest. Creative thinking and planning beat brute speed.
a.k.a. Hot Potato Sprint, Touch and Go
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16 | 8β30 participants | 15β25 minutes | Open indoor or outdoor area β no special setup required
Materials
- One tennis ball (or any smooth, easily handled object of similar size)
- A stopwatch or phone timer
Quick-Run Card
- Gather the group. Hold up the ball.
- State the goal: “Every single person touches this ball. We measure from the moment I let go to the moment the last person touches it. Your job is to make that time as short as possible.”
- Give 1β2 minutes of planning time. No touching the ball yet.
- Run the first attempt. Call the time aloud.
- Give another 1β2 minutes of re-planning. “Can you beat your time?”
- Run again. Repeat 2β4 rounds or until the group hits a strategy breakthrough.
- Announce the final record. Celebrate.
Setup & Boundaries
- No fixed formation required β participants choose their own arrangement.
- Players must remain on their feet during the attempt (no lying on the ground to form a pile, unless the group proposes it and it is safe).
- The ball must be a discrete physical touch β no rolling over someone without contact.
- Clear the space of tripping hazards before the first run.
How to Play The facilitator holds the ball. On “Go,” the facilitator releases it to the first person. From that moment, the clock runs. Every participant must make clear physical contact with the ball. The clock stops when the final person touches it. Groups typically start with a line pass. Encourage re-planning between rounds. Watch for the “aha” moment when groups discover they can cluster together and pass the ball through in under a second.
I-OPt Roles Every round, participants can simultaneously take:
- Strategist β proposes the arrangement or sequence before each run.
- Timekeeper β counts or tracks the round timer and announces it clearly.
- Anchor β holds position to ensure the sequence works at full speed. Roles can shift between rounds freely.
Inclusion Supports
- Participants with limited hand mobility may touch the ball with any body part β elbow, shoulder, foot, or forehead all count.
- For participants who cannot stand, position them at the start or end of the sequence so the ball comes to them.
- Participants with sensory sensitivities around unexpected touch should know the ball is coming to them β no surprise passes.
- Offer a “captain” role for participants who want to contribute strategically without physical contact: they plan the sequence but do not need to touch the ball. (Note for facilitator: if using this option, frame it as a strategy role, not an exclusion.)
Stewardship One participant places the ball back in the equipment bag at the end. 30-second reflection: “Think of one moment in the last round where you trusted someone else to do their part. What did that feel like?”
Consent Pre-brief: “We’ll be passing a ball and probably standing close together to speed things up. You’re welcome to opt for a position at the start or end of the sequence if you’d rather not be in the middle of a group cluster.” Mid-game check-in: After the second round, ask “Everyone good? Any position changes needed?” before running again. Opt-out / re-entry: Anyone who needs a break steps to the side and rejoins at the next round’s planning phase.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Ball dropped causes collision scramble | Low | Remind group: dropped ball means a restart, not a sprint after it |
| Pushing during close-contact strategies | Low | Pre-brief: no grabbing or pushing; only touch the ball |
| Participant excluded from strategy planning | Medium | Facilitator checks: “Does everyone’s voice have a spot in the plan?” |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Name toss: stand in a circle, toss the ball while calling out a teammate’s name. Quick and fun β primes for the challenge.
- 30-second stretch: wrist rolls, shoulder rolls, finger spreads.
Debrief What? “What was your first strategy? What was your best one?” So what? “Why did your fastest strategy work? What changed between your first and last attempts?” Now what? “When have you been in a real situation where the obvious approach wasn’t actually the quickest? What did you do?”
Cleanup & Reset Return ball to equipment bag. No other setup to clear.
