Name and Purpose
- Foam Blocker is a fast-moving individual challenge set inside a team rotation.
- Players develop hand-eye coordination, reaction time, and focus while everyone gets a turn in the spotlight.
a.k.a.
- Ball Blocker, The Defender
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-20 players | 15-25 minutes | Gymnasium or large flat indoor/outdoor space
Materials
- 8-12 foam or Nerf-type balls.
- 1 pool noodle.
- 3 hula hoops or rope coils as base markers.
- Optional: cones to mark outer boundaries.
Quick-Run Card
- Set two bases side by side, separated by about 1 metre. Place the third base centred, about 2-3 metres away.
- One player stands in the centre base as the Blocker, holding the pool noodle.
- One player stands in each side base as a Thrower. Both Throwers throw foam balls simultaneously.
- The Blocker uses the noodle to deflect as many balls as possible.
- After 30-60 seconds, roles rotate clockwise. Everyone gets a turn as Blocker.
Setup and Boundaries
- Place the three bases as described. Mark outer boundaries with cones if space allows.
- Signal: one whistle blast means stop throwing. Two blasts mean gather.
- Staff stand to the side, not behind Throwers, to observe safely.
- Check floor for slip hazards before play.
How to Play
- One player starts as the Blocker in the centre base.
- Two Throwers stand in the side bases. All other players wait in a rotation line.
- On go, Throwers throw foam balls one at a time toward the Blocker.
- Blocker uses the pool noodle to deflect balls away.
- After 30-60 seconds, the staff blows one whistle. Roles rotate: Blocker moves to a Thrower base, one Thrower moves to the rotation line, next player in line becomes Blocker.
- Play continues until everyone has had at least one turn as Blocker.
- Optional learning moment: after all turns, invite the group to reflect on the learning point (see Debrief).
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Take a Blocker or Thrower role.
- S (Support): Retrieve and return balls between rotations, keeping the game flowing.
- Q (Quiet): Join the rotation at a later position. Watch first, then step in when ready.
- O (Observer): Watch and count how many balls the Blocker deflects. Share results after each round.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Reduce throwing distance for Throwers to make the challenge easier for the Blocker.
- Seated Blocker variation: player in the centre base sits in a chair and uses the noodle from a seated position.
Stewardship Moment
- Foam balls are collected and reused every round. Assign a ball-retrieval team.
- Reflection: We used the same equipment over and over. How does reuse change how we think about what we have?
Consent
- Pre-brief: The Blocker role puts you in the middle of the action for about a minute. For those not comfortable being in the centre, the Observer and Ball-Retrieval roles are just as important to keeping the game going.
- Mid-game check: After a few rotations, ask: How is everyone feeling? Thumbs up, sideways, or down.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can move to the Observer or Support role at any time. Rejoin the rotation by stepping back into the line.
Risks and Mitigation
- Balls thrown too hard: remind Throwers that the goal is to challenge the Blocker, not to overpower them. Medium-pace throws only.
- Pool noodle used aggressively: clarify the noodle is for deflecting balls, not swinging at people.
- Crowding near the bases: keep rotation line at least 2 metres from the play area.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Juggling Scarves: each player tries to keep one or two scarves in the air using only hands. Warms up hand-eye tracking.
- Slow-Motion Catch: pairs throw a foam ball back and forth in slow motion. Builds focus before full speed play.
Debrief Questions
- What? What did you notice about being the Blocker versus being a Thrower?
- So What? What does this game show us about what we see in movies or games versus real skill?
- Now What? Where in your life do you need to focus and react quickly? How do you practise that?
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all foam balls and return to storage.
- Collect pool noodle and hula hoops.
- Check floor for any scuff marks or debris.
