Requirements
Better if done standing. When I get to the “shhhh, they’re sleeping” part I “whisper” as loudly as I can. (the kids think it is hilarious) When you get to the part “The dew falls away” it just naturally seems better to use as slow and deep and loud a voice as you have.
Objective
Get the kids going! And it works! Even old grumps get their day off better when this is sung!
Description
Way up in sky the little birds fly
(make arms “fly”)
While down in the nest, the little birds rest
(palms together, head tilted to side resting on hands,
eyes closed “sleeping”)
With a wing on the left
(make “wing” with left hand in L armpit, move elbow up and down)
And a wing on the right
(repeat above with R hand in R armpit)
The little birds sleep … all through the night.
(repeat palms together, head tilted to side resting on
hands, eyes closed “sleeping”)
Shhhhhhhh – they’re sleeping.
(make a fist, extend pointer finger, put it to lips)
Then UP comes the sun
(raise hands from sides to overhead “touchdown”
position)
The dew falls away
(press hands down and away toward back)
Good morning, Good morning, the little birds say
(head nodding back and forth between hands, hands “talk” to each other – fingers flat, aligned with thumbs and moved open and closed)
