Name and Purpose
- Leader vs. Camper Balloon Toss is a classic cool-off game that builds playful trust between leaders and campers.
- Players practise timing, spatial awareness, and joyful risk-taking in a low-pressure setting.
a.k.a.
- Toss and Catch, Balloon Catch Challenge
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players | 15-20 minutes | Open outdoor area, minimum 10m x 10m, with clear overhead space
Materials
- Reusable rubber water balloons, 2 per leader-camper pair plus a stock of extras
- Large tubs or buckets for balloon storage
- Trash bags for cleanup
- Cones to mark the leader line and camper zone
Quick-Run Card
- Leaders line up at one end; campers gather 10-15 feet away.
- On the go signal, leaders lob balloons in a high arc toward the camper group.
- Campers try to catch incoming balloons. A successful catch earns a bonus moment.
- Bonus: that camper chooses a leader to gently toss one balloon toward.
- Collect all fragments. Swap leader and camper roles. Play 3-4 rounds.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark the leader line with cones; mark the camper zone edge with cones
- Clear overhead of low-hanging branches or obstacles before play
- Signal: 1 whistle blast = pause; 2 blasts = stop and gather
- Check the ground for uneven surfaces or slippery grass
How to Play
- Leaders line up shoulder-to-shoulder at the leader line. Campers gather loosely in the camper zone.
- On the go signal, each leader lobs their balloon in a high arc toward the camper group. Leaders aim for the air above the group, not at individuals.
- Campers move freely to try to catch an incoming balloon before it lands.
- A successful catch earns a bonus: that camper picks a leader and gently tosses a balloon toward them. The leader tries to catch it.
- Whether the balloon is caught or breaks, the result is wet and fun either way.
- Between rounds, both groups collect fragments together. Reload and swap roles.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Throw or chase and catch balloons in the main zone
- S (Support): Help reload tubs, count catches, or cheer for specific players
- Q (Quiet): Stand at the edge of the camper zone and catch only balloons that come close, without chasing
- O (Observer): Watch from outside the play area, choose when to rotate in
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer not to run can stand in a designated “waiting zone” where balloons are lobbed gently and directly toward them
- Leaders can adjust throw height and arc based on the group, keeping throws gentle and high rather than fast
Stewardship Moment
- Between every round, both leaders and campers collect fragments together. Frame it as: “This space belongs to everyone who uses it after us. Let’s leave it better than we found it.”
- Reflection: “Water balloons are fun. What’s the difference between a reusable one and a single-use one? What does that matter?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves getting wet. For those not comfortable getting fully soaked, the support and quiet roles let you stay involved without being in the splash zone.”
- Mid-game check: After round one, give a quick thumbs check. Adjust roles if needed.
- Opt-out and re-entry: Any player can move to the support zone at any time by raising one hand. Rejoin the main zone whenever ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Balloons thrown hard rather than lobbed (impact risk): demonstrate a gentle high-arc lob before play; reinforce during the first round
- Balloon fragments on the ground (slip hazard): mandatory fragment pickup between every round; do not start a new round until the zone is clear
- Campers crowding and colliding while chasing: remind players to watch their surroundings; encourage calling “I got it!” to avoid collisions
- Sun exposure: keep tubs in shade; offer a water break between rounds
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Name Toss”: partners stand 3m apart and toss a dry ball back and forth, calling each other’s name on each toss
- “Rain Check”: everyone stands still with hands out and leaders walk through the group letting small water trickles fall from a cup above each player to preview the wet feeling
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when a camper made a catch and got to toss one back? How did that feel?”
- So What? “What does it mean when leaders and campers play together rather than against each other?”
- Now What? “Where else in your week do you get to flip the roles? What does it feel like to be the one in charge for a moment?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Leaders and campers collect all balloon fragments together into trash bags
- Empty and store tubs
- Walk the play area to check for remaining fragments before the next activity
