Name & Purpose Toe Pick-Up is a seated team relay where players use only their toes to collect objects and deliver them to their team’s bag. It builds laughter, teamwork, and fine motor creativity.
a.k.a. Toe Relay; Bare-Foot Relay
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16. 8β30 players. 15β25 minutes. Flat indoor or outdoor surface β grass, gym floor, or smooth ground.
Materials
- 15β30 mixed objects: marbles, crayons, stuffed toys, envelopes, rubber bands, pine cones, coat hangers (vary difficulty)
- 2 large sturdy bags or buckets β one per team, placed at opposite sides of the circle
- Notepad and pen for the facilitator to track call counts
- Optional: a small towel per player for wiping feet
Quick-Run Card
- Players remove shoes and socks, sit in a circle with bare feet pointing inward.
- Scatter all objects in the centre of the circle.
- Number players 1, 2, 3 β¦ around the circle. Odds = Team 1, evens = Team 2.
- Facilitator calls two numbers β one odd, one even β simultaneously.
- Those two players scoot (no standing) to an object, grip it with their toes, carry it to their team’s bag, drop it in.
- They return to their spot. Repeat until all objects are claimed.
- Count objects per bag. Most objects wins.
Setup & Boundaries Form a circle of seated players. Place Team 1’s bag at the “north” edge of the circle, Team 2’s bag at the “south” edge. Scatter all objects evenly across the centre. Keep a tally of how many times each player’s number has been called so everyone gets roughly equal turns. Players must scoot β not stand or crawl on hands and knees β throughout.
How to Play Facilitator calls one odd and one even number together. Both named players immediately scoot toward the object pile, pick one object with their toes (no hands!), and scoot to their team’s bag. Drop the object in β toes only. Return to spot. If a player is mid-grasp when their turn is ended, they release the object and return immediately. When all objects are collected, teams count their bags. The team with more objects wins. Run multiple rounds with fresh objects or swap team compositions.
I-OPt Roles Each round, teams can self-organise around three approaches:
- Sprinters: move fast, go for nearby easy objects to get points on the board.
- Specialists: target the hard objects (marbles, coat hangers) that other players avoid.
- Coaches: teammates not currently active cheer and call out which objects look grippable β they cannot touch objects but can give verbal tips. Players choose their own style each round.
Inclusion Supports
- Players who cannot sit on the floor can use a low chair and participate using the same toe-grasp mechanic.
- Players with limited foot mobility can use a modified grip (toes plus heel pinch) or grip between ankles β accept any creative solution that does not use hands.
- Objects can be resized: offer larger, softer items (rolled socks, small stuffed animals) alongside harder ones.
- Players with sensory sensitivities around bare feet can wear thin grip socks.
- Hearing differences: facilitator holds up a numbered card alongside the verbal call.
Stewardship All players collect objects from both bags and return them to the facilitator’s container. 30-second reflection: “One thing this game needed was patience. Name a moment today when you had to slow down to get a better grip.”
Consent Pre-brief: “We’ll be barefoot today. If anyone has a medical reason to keep shoes on, a sock modification works fine β no questions asked. Tell me now or quietly before we start.” Mid-game check-in: After 5 calls, pause: “Is anyone uncomfortable β feet, floor, anything? Thumbs up to keep going.” Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can skip their turn by passing. They re-enter whenever they are ready β just rejoin the circle.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp objects cut feet | Low | Screen all objects before play; remove coat hangers with sharp ends; use only smooth hangers |
| Players strain hip flexors scooting | Low | Warm up hips and ankles before play; allow players to shift position |
| Hard objects (marbles) slip and roll under sitters | Medium | Facilitator sweeps stray objects back to centre between calls |
| Embarrassment about bare feet | Low | Normalise with a light warm-up that gets everyone shoes-off before the game starts |
| Over-competitive scooting causes collisions | Low | Remind players scooting is slow β speed comes from strategy, not rushing |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Toe Wiggle Race: sitting, scrunch and spread toes 10 times as fast as possible.
- Pick up a sock with toes β first player to move it 30 cm wins.
- Ankle circles: 5 forward, 5 back, both feet.
Debrief What? “What was the hardest object to pick up? What made it easier?” So what? “How did your team communicate while you were scooting?” Now what? “Think of a task at camp that feels awkward at first but gets easier with practice. What would it look like to tackle that with your team?”
Cleanup & Reset Place all objects back in the facilitator’s container. Return bags/buckets to storage. Players put shoes and socks back on. Reset takes under 3 minutes.
