Name and Purpose
- Huh! is a high-energy rhythm and attention game that builds focus, reaction speed, and group connection.
- Players practise staying present, reading signals, and moving in sync with the group.
a.k.a.
- Samurai Circle, Huh Master
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 10-16 | 10-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Indoor hall or outdoor flat area with room for a standing circle
Materials
- No materials required
Quick-Run Card
- Group stands in a circle. Facilitator starts as the Huh Leader.
- Everyone raises hands overhead and bows at the waist with a group “Huh!” to open the round.
- Huh Leader raises both hands and points clearly across the circle, calling “HUH!”
- The chosen player raises both hands straight up; players on either side “strike” toward them (a mime, no contact).
- Chosen player picks a new person and continues the pattern.
Setup and Boundaries
- Group stands in a clear circle with enough space between players that “strike” gestures do not make contact
- Signal: facilitator raises both hands and says “Reset” to restart a stalled round
- No physical contact: all striking gestures are mimed
How to Play
- The group forms a standing circle. The facilitator (or a confident volunteer) begins as the Huh Leader.
- The whole group opens the round together: raise hands overhead and bow at the waist with a group “HUH!” sound.
- The Huh Leader raises both hands clearly, then points to a player directly across the circle, calling “HUH!”
- The chosen player immediately raises both hands straight up.
- At the same moment, the players on either side of the chosen player “strike” toward them with a gong-like gesture (both arms sweeping in, no actual contact).
- The chosen player then becomes the new pointer: raise both hands, point clearly to a new player across the circle, call “HUH!”
- The pattern continues. The goal is to keep a clear, clean rhythm without breaking the flow.
- A player pauses the round if they are unclear who was chosen or if they break the rhythm significantly; the group resets warmly and continues.
- There is no elimination: a mistake means a warm reset, not sitting out.
I-OPt Options
- Start: A (Active): Jump into the circle immediately and commit to the rhythm from the first beat
- Start: S (Support): Help form the circle and model the starting gesture for others
- Start: Q (Quiet): Stand in the circle and observe the opening round before pointing to anyone
- Start: O (Observer): Watch from just outside the circle for one round before stepping in
- Mid: A (Active): Point quickly and clearly; match the energy of the group
- Mid: S (Support): Make clear, generous gestures when striking to help the chosen player feel seen
- Mid: Q (Quiet): Participate at a comfortable pace; point calmly and clearly
- Mid: O (Observer): Step into the circle when ready; the group will welcome you in
- Late: A (Active): Help increase the pace of the round for an added challenge
- Late: S (Support): Help the facilitator sense when to wrap up
- Late: Q (Quiet): Continue in the circle at your own rhythm
- Late: O (Observer): Join the debrief circle
- End: A (Active): Lead a final group “HUH!” to close the round
- End: S (Support): Help gather the group for the debrief
- End: Q (Quiet): Give a thumbs up or one-word response
- End: O (Observer): Listen and share one observation
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who are not comfortable with the sound or intensity may participate as “Keepers”: they count successful exchanges and report to the group
- Players with hearing considerations may watch for the point gesture rather than relying on the spoken call; the game works visually
Stewardship Moment
- No materials, no footprint
- Reflection: “This game only works when everyone pays full attention to each other. What does that kind of attention feel like?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This is a fast-paced game that involves being pointed at and having the players on either side of you make a big gesture toward you. For those not comfortable with sudden gestures nearby, acting as a Keeper and counting the round is a great role.”
- Mid-game check: After 3-4 minutes, pause briefly. “Everyone good? Thumbs up, sideways, or down.”
- Opt-out/re-entry: A player may step out of the circle at any time and rejoin as a Keeper. They re-enter the circle when ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- “Strike” gestures making accidental contact: require clear space between players (at least arm’s length); all strikes are mimed
- A player repeatedly being skipped: facilitator gently ensures the Huh Leader points across the circle rather than always to the same people
- Confusion about who was chosen: require the pointer to make clear eye contact and use a deliberate point before calling “HUH!”
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Clap Pass”: a single clap is passed around the circle, keeping a steady beat
- “Mirror Leader”: pairs mirror each other’s movements for 30 seconds, then switch
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when someone was unsure who had been chosen?”
- So What? “What made it easier to stay focused and in rhythm?”
- Now What? “Where else in camp life does the whole group need to stay focused and in sync?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No cleanup required
- Check the circle space for any belongings before dispersing
