Name and Purpose
- Two-Ball Shootout keeps everyone moving at a basketball hoop with a fast back-and-forth shooting challenge.
- Players practise shooting, rebounding, and managing pressure in a small-group setting.
a.k.a.
- Knockout, Around the World Basketball
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-20 players | 10-20 minutes | Basketball court with one hoop
Materials
- 2 basketballs
- 1 basketball hoop
- Cone or line to mark shooting spot (free throw line or closer for younger players)
- Whistle
Quick-Run Card
- Players form a single file line at the shooting spot.
- First two players each get a ball. First player shoots.
- If the first player scores before the second player, they go to the back of the line.
- If the second player scores before the first player, the first player moves to the Second Circle.
- Second Circle players practise layups or free throws. After one successful basket, they rejoin the back of the line.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark the shooting spot with a cone. Adjust the distance based on age and skill (closer for younger groups).
- Signal: staff whistle = pause all play; verbal cue from leader for start of each turn
- Check the court surface for wet spots or debris before play
How to Play
- Players form a single file line at the marked shooting spot.
- The first two players each hold a ball. The first player shoots.
- The second player may not shoot until the first player has released their ball.
- Both players retrieve their own rebound and continue shooting until they score.
- If the first player scores before the second player, they return to the back of the line. The third player in line now gets a ball.
- If the second player scores before the first player, the first player moves to the Second Circle at the side of the court.
- Second Circle players practise from a closer spot: layups, a closer free throw, or a dribbling challenge. After one successful basket, they rejoin the back of the main line.
- The game continues until time is called. No single winner is declared. Celebrate total baskets made by the whole group.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Compete in the main shooting line; focus on speed and accuracy
- S (Support): Cheer from the line; call encouraging words for each shooter
- Q (Quiet): Practice shooting from the Second Circle spot at a comfortable pace
- O (Observer): Count total group baskets; track and announce the group score; choose when to join the line
Inclusion Adaptations
- Lower the shooting spot for younger or shorter players; a closer line or underhand shot is always valid
- Players who use a wheelchair may shoot from the position that works best for them; the Second Circle task can be adapted to a dribbling or passing challenge
Stewardship Moment
- Collect both balls and return them to storage at the end of play.
- Reflection: “Basketball courts take a lot of upkeep. What did you notice about how we shared this space?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves friendly shooting competition under a little pressure. For those not comfortable with the competition format, the Second Circle shooting practice and the group score-counting role are great ways to be part of the game.”
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, pause. “Is the pace okay? Should we adjust the shooting distance?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Step to the sideline at any time. Rejoin the back of the line whenever ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collision when both players chase a rebound: remind players to call “ball!” and give space when going for the rebound
- Ball hitting a waiting player in line: waiting players stand to the side of the shooting lane, not directly behind the shooter
- Frustration at repeated “knock outs”: reframe with the Second Circle skill practice and celebrate total group baskets
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Around the Key”: each player takes one shot from five spots around the key before the game begins
- Free shooting warm-up for 2-3 minutes so everyone has touched the ball before the pressure starts
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was your best shot? What was the hardest moment?”
- So What? “How did it feel when you had to move to the practice zone? What did you do there?”
- Now What? “How do you keep practising something when you do not get it right the first time?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return both basketballs to storage
- Collect cone
- Check court surface
