Name and Purpose
- Wall Ball Freeze builds quick reactions, spatial awareness, and number recall in a fast-paced wall game.
- Players practise decision-making under pressure and learn to read movement and space.
a.k.a.
- Number Ball, Freeze Ball
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 15-25 minutes | Large wall with 10m x 10m open space in front
Materials
- 1 soft rubber or foam bouncy ball (tennis-ball size)
- Cones or chalk lines for side boundaries
- Numbered cards or wristbands (optional, helps younger groups track numbers)
Quick-Run Card
- Mark a boundary 10m in front of the wall. Assign each player a number.
- First thrower bounces ball off wall and calls out a number. All others scatter.
- Player whose number was called chases the ball and shouts MOUSE. Everyone freezes.
- Ball-holder rolls the ball (mouse-scurry style) at any frozen player.
- Score a point if ball hits a frozen player. If ball hits the wall or stops short, roller loses a point. Track points over 5-10 rounds . highest score wins.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark side boundaries with cones or chalk lines
- Set a minimum wall-height line with chalk or tape (adjust by age group)
- Signal: 1 short whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Check ground for wet patches, debris, or uneven surface before play
How to Play
- Assign a number to each player. Players stand in the open space facing the wall.
- The starting thrower bounces the ball off the wall and calls a number. All other players run in any direction.
- The player whose number was called runs to retrieve the ball. Once they have it, they shout MOUSE. All others freeze immediately.
- The ball-holder scans for movement. If they spot a player moving, they call RAT-TRAP and name that player. That player loses 1 point (note: calling RAT-TRAP ends the roll, so the ball-holder chooses one or the other).
- The ball-holder rolls the ball along the ground at any frozen player. If the ball hits a player before stopping or hitting a wall, the roller earns 1 point. If the ball stops short or hits the wall, the ball-holder loses 1 point.
- If the ball rolls past everyone and is closest to a new player when it stops, that player may choose to throw it (or pass to a teammate if playing team format).
- The player who scored (or lost a point) becomes the next thrower. Round resets.
- Play 5-10 rounds. Highest cumulative score wins.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run, dodge, and compete for the ball and highest score
- S (Support): Play in team format, call strategy to your number-partner
- Q (Quiet): Take the role of score-keeper, tracking points on a clipboard or in the dirt
- O (Observer): Watch from the side, choose when to join in the next round
Inclusion Adaptations
- Walking-only variation: all movement during the scatter phase is at a walking pace
- Larger, softer ball (foam dodgeball) for players with catching or grip challenges
- Verbal number cards held up visually for players who benefit from a visual cue alongside the called number
Stewardship Moment
- Use a soft reusable ball, not a disposable item. Wipe down and store after play.
- 60-second sweep: players check the play area for litter or left equipment before leaving.
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves quick movement and freezing in place. For those who prefer not to run or who need a lower-intensity role, keeping score or helping track points is a great way to play.”
- Mid-game check: After round 3, pause. Thumbs up, sideways, or down . how is everyone doing?
- Opt-out/re-entry: Raise both hands to step back. Rejoin as the next thrower when ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collision while chasing the ball: remind players to watch where they are running, not just the ball
- Ball rolling into other play areas: set clear side boundaries with cones before starting
- Dispute over movement during freeze: staff calls the final decision, no arguing during play
- Calling RAT-TRAP and rolling in the same turn: clarify at the start that it is one action per turn
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Number Sprint: call a number and that player runs to touch the wall. Practises the core mechanic without the freeze element.
- Statue Game: players walk around freely, on whistle they freeze. Practise freezing on signal.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was the hardest moment in the game . catching the ball, freezing, or deciding where to roll?”
- So What? “What did you notice about how you reacted when your number was called?”
- Now What? “Where else do you have to stay calm and make a quick decision under pressure?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect ball and any cones or chalk markers
- Check wall area for scuff marks if using chalk height line
- Return equipment to storage
