Name and Purpose
- Foot to Foot Tag adds a fun, low-to-the-ground twist to classic freeze tag.
- Players practise quick decision-making, spatial awareness, and creative cooperation as they seek safety in pairs.
a.k.a.
- Sole Mates Tag, Freeze and Sole
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Medium outdoor field or gym (roughly 20m x 20m); ground must be clean and soft enough to lie on
Materials
- Cones to mark boundaries
- Whistle for signals
- Optional: a yoga mat or folded tarp at the edge for players who prefer not to lie directly on grass or floor
Quick-Run Card
- Mark boundaries with cones.
- One person starts as “It.”
- Players are safe when two players lie on their backs with the soles of their feet pressing together.
- A safe pair can only hold that position for 5 seconds. Then they must get up and move.
- If tagged while not in a safe pair, the tagged player becomes “It.”
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a clear boundary with cones before the group arrives
- Walk the ground: check for rocks, roots, wet patches, or debris
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause all movement; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Note: this activity involves lying on the ground. Staff will know which players may need the mat alternative.
How to Play
- One player starts as “It” and begins chasing.
- All other players move freely inside the boundary.
- To be safe, two players lie on their backs and press the soles of their feet together.
- A pair may only hold the safe position for 5 seconds before they must get up and keep moving.
- Only two players may share a safe pair at once. A third person cannot join.
- If “It” tags a player who is not in a safe pair, that player becomes “It.”
- After 3-4 minutes, staff calls a rotation and chooses a new “It” so different players get a turn.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run freely, seek and form pairs quickly, take on the “It” role with energy
- S (Support): Move at a steady pace, be the first to lie down and invite a partner into a safe pair
- Q (Quiet): Walk-pace movement, use the mat option, stay near the edges where safe pairings form more slowly
- O (Observer): Watch from the sideline, count how many safe pairs form, choose when to step in
Inclusion Adaptations
- Mat option: a yoga mat at the edge lets players participate in foot-to-foot contact while lying on a cleaner surface
- Seated variation: two players sit back-to-back and touch feet outward instead of lying down, for players who cannot lie on the ground
Stewardship Moment
- Before play: remind players to check their ground space and move any litter or debris before lying down
- After play: 60-second sweep of the field
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves lying on the ground and touching feet with another player. For those not comfortable lying on the ground, a seated foot-touch version is another option. The mat at the edge is also there for anyone who wants it.”
- Mid-game check: After 5 minutes, quick pause. “How is everyone doing? Thumbs up, sideways, or down.”
- Opt-out / re-entry: Step to the edge of the boundary at any time. Raise your hand to re-enter as a free runner.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players colliding while running to form pairs: remind players to approach pairs from the side, not at full sprint
- Ground discomfort: always check the surface first; mat option available
- One player stuck as “It” for too long: staff should call a rotation after 3-4 minutes at most
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Foot Shake”: everyone finds a partner and taps the soles of their feet together while standing. Get comfortable with the gesture before lying down.
- “Freeze”: 30 seconds of classic freeze tag with a hand signal before introducing the foot-to-foot safe rule
Debrief Questions
- What? “What made it easy or hard to find a partner quickly?”
- So What? “How did it feel to be the one who got left out of a pair?”
- Now What? “What can we do in our group to make sure no one feels left searching for a partner?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect cones
- Roll and store mat or tarp
- Quick sweep of the play space
