Name and Purpose
- Four Corners Capture the Flag is a four-team twist on a camp classic that keeps every team active even after losing their flags.
- Players practise strategy, communication, and fast decision-making in a large, dynamic field game.
a.k.a.
- Four-Team Flag Hunt, Colour Corner Capture
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 10-16 | 20-60 players | 30-50 minutes | Large outdoor field (at least 40m x 40m). Two long ropes or chalk lines divide the space into four equal quadrants.
Materials
- 2 long ropes or chalk lines to divide the field into four quadrants (cross formation)
- 12 coloured bandanas or flags, 3 per team colour, in 4 team colours (e.g., red, blue, yellow, green)
- Coloured bandanas or wristbands to identify each team member
- 4 hula hoops for jails, one in each quadrant
- Whistle
- Optional cones for outer boundary
Quick-Run Card
- Lay ropes in a cross to divide the field into four quadrants. Place a hula hoop jail in each.
- Assign each team a colour and give them 3 flags of the other 3 team colours to guard in their corner.
- Teams try to retrieve their own coloured flags from the other three corners.
- Players tagged in another team’s zone go to that team’s jail until freed by a teammate.
- First team to collect all 3 of their own flags and bring them home wins.
Setup and Boundaries
- Lay ropes on the ground in a cross pattern to create four clear quadrants
- Each team sets up in one quadrant. Flags are placed visibly at the back of each quadrant (not hidden).
- Hula hoop jails go in a clear spot in each quadrant, away from the flag area
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather at centre
- Walk the field before play: mark any hazards with a cone
How to Play
- Each team starts in their own quadrant. They have 3 flags to guard: one flag in each of the other team colours.
- Players may move freely in their own quadrant. When they cross a rope into another quadrant, they can be tagged by that team.
- A tagged player goes to the jail (hula hoop) in the quadrant where they were tagged.
- To free a jailed teammate, a player from the same team must enter that quadrant and physically touch their teammate without being tagged. Both players then walk back with hands raised (free walk).
- To retrieve a flag, a player must reach the opposing corner without being tagged. They carry the flag back across the rope. If tagged while carrying a flag, they return the flag and go to jail.
- Players may only carry one flag at a time.
- A team whose corner is emptied of flags can shift entirely to offense.
- First team to collect all 3 of their own coloured flags and return them to their corner wins the round.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Play as a flag runner or rescuer. Full sprint across quadrant lines.
- S (Support): Play as a defender in your own quadrant. Direct teammates, guard the flag area, call out threats.
- Q (Quiet): Stay near your own boundary, tag players who enter your zone, walk the jail rescue role.
- O (Observer): Watch from the sideline, track which flags are still in play, choose when to step in.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Defenders-only role: players who prefer not to cross into other quadrants can play as dedicated defenders in their home zone. Full participation, lower physical demand.
- Walking-only variation: designate a small group of players who play at walking pace throughout. All rules apply.
Stewardship Moment
- Bandanas and ropes are reusable. After play, fold and store them carefully.
- Reflection: “This field held four teams at once. What made it feel fair or unfair? What would you change?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves running into other teams’ areas and some physical tagging. For those not comfortable with tagging contact, playing as a defender in your home zone the whole game is a great option.”
- Mid-game check: After 10 minutes, quick pause. “How is everyone feeling? Thumbs up, sideways, or down.”
- Opt-out / re-entry: Step to your team’s corner at any time. Return to play when you are ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collisions at quadrant boundary lines: remind players to slow down when crossing; no charging through groups
- Confusion about rules mid-game: walk through one practice round before full play begins
- One team eliminated from defense too early: remind teams that losing all guarded flags means they shift to offense only. They are still fully in the game.
- Tagging disputes: if unsure, the tagged player goes to jail. No arguments. Quick reset.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Quadrant Walk”: each team walks their own quadrant and identifies where their flags will go and where the jail will be
- Quick practice round at 50% speed to learn the tagging and jail rules before full play
Debrief Questions
- What? “Which part of the game surprised you? Did any team’s strategy shift?”
- So What? “What happened to your team’s energy when you lost all your flags? How did you respond?”
- Now What? “When things change quickly in real life, what helps you adjust and keep going?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all bandanas, ropes, hula hoops, and cones
- Fold ropes carefully for reuse
- Quick field sweep
