Name and Purpose
- Go Fish! turns a card game into a full-body running game with an ocean theme.
- Players practise quick thinking, group communication, and joyful chaos in a game that keeps everyone moving.
a.k.a.
- Ocean Tag, Fishing Frenzy
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 15-40 players | 15-30 minutes | Medium field or gym with a clear home base (wall, line, or cones)
Materials
- Pre-made ocean object cards (one per player; laminated for long-term reuse)
- Suggested objects: seaweed, coral, seahorse, shark, whale, urchin, jellyfish, clam, starfish, puffer fish
- Cards should include the object name plus a simple drawing or icon for younger players
- A clear home base (wall, painted line, or row of cones)
- Whistle
Quick-Run Card
- Form 3 or more teams. Give each player an ocean object card.
- Teams pick a name and a leader. Leaders draw a card to determine which object to call for, and from which team.
- The calling team shouts: “Team [name], do you have any [object]?”
- Players on the named team holding that card run for home base before being tagged by the calling team.
- If no one has the card, everyone shouts “Go Fish!” and all players from non-calling teams run for base.
- Tagged players join the calling team. Game continues until one team has everyone, or time is called.
Setup and Boundaries
- Shuffle and hand out cards before teams are chosen, so card distribution is random
- Mark home base clearly with cones or use an existing wall
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause all running; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Laminated cards last for many sessions. Handle with care.
How to Play
- Divide players into 3 or more teams. Give each player one ocean object card. Players keep their card visible.
- Teams gather, choose a group name, and select a leader.
- The first team calls out an object and a target team. Example: “Team Sharks, do you have any seahorses?”
- Any player on Team Sharks holding a seahorse card must run to home base before being tagged by the calling team.
- If Team Sharks has no seahorse cards, all players from non-calling teams shout “Go Fish!” and run to base at the same time. The calling team tries to tag as many as possible.
- Tagged players join the calling team for the next round and receive a new card from the stack.
- Teams take turns calling. Rotate calling order so all teams get a turn.
- Play until one team has all players, or call time and celebrate the round.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run hard in chasing or escaping rounds. Take the lead on calling.
- S (Support): Help teammates watch for who has which card. Assist the leader in choosing the call.
- Q (Quiet): Walk-pace participation; home base is always a safe destination at any speed.
- O (Observer): Track which cards have been called, watch from the sideline, step in between rounds.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Cards with drawings or icons support players with reading differences
- Walking-only variation: all chasing and running happens at walking pace throughout
Stewardship Moment
- Cards are laminated and reusable. After play, collect and store them carefully. No cards should be discarded.
- Reflection: “If we had to make new cards every time we played, what would that cost? What does reusing them save?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves running and being tagged. For those not comfortable being chased or tagged, walking pace and the sideline observer role are both great options.”
- Mid-game check: After 3-4 rounds, quick pause. “How is everyone doing? Thumbs up, sideways, or down.”
- Opt-out / re-entry: Step to the sideline at any time. Return to any team at the start of the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collisions when multiple players run to base: stagger the base arrival by calling it a wide line, not a single point
- One team quickly dominating: reshuffle cards or teams after 5 rounds
- Leader calling the same object repeatedly: staff can introduce a “no repeat” rule after round 3
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Card Swap”: before teams are formed, players wander and swap cards with each other twice. Gets them familiar with the object names.
- “Practice Call”: do one slow round together with staff narrating the steps before competitive play begins
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when ‘Go Fish!’ was called? Was that different from being called out directly?”
- So What? “What did it feel like to suddenly be on a new team? How did you settle in?”
- Now What? “When do we have to adapt quickly in real life? What helps?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all cards (count them against the starting total)
- Store in a bag or box for next session
- Quick field sweep
