Name and Purpose
- Gold Rush (Classic) is a team strategy game that rewards smart play over raw speed.
- A team that is less athletic can still win by playing strong defense and working together. This is the version closest to the original description.
a.k.a.
- Gold Grab Classic, Treasure Run
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 10-16 | 20-80 players | 20-40 minutes | Large field with at least 30m on each side of a centre line (long rectangle or square with a centre boundary)
Materials
- 30-100 pieces of gold. Best options: softballs painted gold, large tin foil balls (reusable if handled with care), or foam balls. Gold must be visible in hand.
- 2 crates, buckets, or bins (one per team, placed in the back corner of each team’s area)
- Cones to mark the centre line and outer boundary
- Whistle
Quick-Run Card
- Mark the centre line and outer boundary with cones. Place one gold crate in the back corner of each team’s area.
- On signal, players try to reach the back of the other team’s area without being tagged. They are safe in their own area and once they reach the far back.
- If tagged in the other team’s area, sit where tagged. A teammate frees you with a touch. Freed player walks back; the rescuer cannot be tagged during the walk-back.
- If tagged while carrying gold, hand the gold to the person who tagged you. Then sit.
- Players carry only one piece of gold at a time, held visibly.
- First team to collect all of the opponent’s gold wins.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark the centre line and sidelines clearly before play
- Gold crates go in the back corner of each team’s half, visible and accessible from the back zone
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Walk the field: check for holes, slippery ground, or debris
How to Play
- Divide into two even teams. Teams start in their own half.
- On signal, players advance toward the other team’s side.
- Players are safe in their own half. They are also safe once they reach the far back of the opponent’s area.
- If tagged while in the other team’s half: sit where tagged. A teammate frees you by touching you. Both walk back with hands raised. The rescuer cannot be tagged during this walk-back.
- If out of bounds: sit just inside the boundary. A teammate frees you the same way.
- If tagged while carrying gold: hand the gold to the player who tagged you, then sit.
- Players may only carry one piece of gold at a time. It must be held visibly in hand.
- Gold is brought back and placed in the team’s own crate.
- First team to collect all of the opponent’s gold wins. If time is called, the team with the most gold wins.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Play as an attacker. Cross into the other team’s half, reach the back, carry gold.
- S (Support): Play as a rescuer. Stay near the centre line and free sitting teammates.
- Q (Quiet): Walk-pace attacker or defender. All rules apply.
- O (Observer): Count gold in both crates, call out strategy from the sideline, step in between rounds.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Gold counters: players who prefer not to run can count and announce gold totals for their team
- Walking-only zone: a lane along the boundary where all play is at walking pace
Stewardship Moment
- Tin foil balls and painted softballs are reusable. Collect all pieces of gold after every round.
- Reflection: “What happens to a camp that takes care of its shared equipment? What happens to one that doesn’t?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves running, tagging, and sitting when tagged. For those not comfortable with tagging contact, playing as a gold counter or sideline strategist is a great option.”
- Mid-game check: After 10 minutes, quick pause. “How is everyone doing? Thumbs up, sideways, or down.”
- Opt-out / re-entry: Step to the sideline at any time. Return to your team between plays.
Risks and Mitigation
- Aggressive tagging: a touch counts. Pushing or grabbing is not a tag. Staff enforce this immediately.
- Players refusing to sit when tagged: the rule is non-negotiable. Staff address it calmly and quickly.
- One team quickly losing all gold: if the game becomes too one-sided, add a mid-game gold reset and focus on strategy for the next round.
- Sun and heat: for long games, build in a 2-minute water break
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Tag Practice”: pairs take turns tagging and being tagged in a small zone, to set the tone for appropriate tag intensity
- “Gold Relay”: each team passes a piece of gold down the line as fast as possible before the full game begins
Debrief Questions
- What? “Which strategy worked best for your team? Offense, defense, or rescuing?”
- So What? “Did the less-fast players make a difference? How?”
- Now What? “Where else do you see teams win not because they are the fastest, but because they work together?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Count and collect all pieces of gold
- Store in crates or bags for next time
- Collect cones
- Quick field sweep
