Name and Purpose
- Grab the Pig is a fast-reaction game that builds focus, teamwork, and trust.
- Players practise staying still, communicating through touch, and reacting quickly under pressure.
a.k.a.
- Squeeze Pass, Chain Reaction, Signal Squeeze
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players (4-15 per team) | 10-20 minutes | Any flat seated space, indoors or outdoors
Materials
- 1 rubber pig, rubber chicken, or any grab-able object
- 1 coin
- Flat seated surface (grass, gym floor, or chairs)
Quick-Run Card
- Two teams sit in parallel lines, hands linked behind them , eyes closed except the last person.
- Flip the coin between the two end players.
- Tails: squeeze travels up the line. Heads: do nothing.
- First front player to grab the object scores a point for their team.
- Front players rotate to the back. Repeat.
Setup and Boundaries
- Two teams sit in single-file lines side by side, close enough that the object sits between the two front players.
- Signal: 1 short whistle or clap = round over, everyone open eyes and reset.
- Staff should be aware of any players with hand or wrist sensitivities.
How to Play
- Each team sits in a single-file line facing the same direction.
- Players reach back with their right hand and hold the left hand of the person behind them.
- All players except the last person in each line close their eyes and keep heads down.
- Staff or the two end players flip a coin between them.
- If the coin lands tails, the end player squeezes the hand of the person in front of them.
- The squeeze travels up the line as fast as possible.
- When the front player feels the squeeze, they try to grab the object before the other team’s front player.
- The team that grabs first scores a point.
- If someone squeezes on heads, the other team scores a point.
- Front players rotate to the back after each round.

Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer not to hold hands can link pinky fingers or hold a short piece of rope instead.
- For players with limited hand strength, a gentle tap on the wrist replaces a squeeze.
Stewardship Moment
- The object can be any safe household item. No single-use materials needed.
- Reflection: “We reused one simple object for the whole game. What else could we reuse instead of replacing?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves holding hands in a chain. For those not comfortable with hand-holding, a rope handle or pinky link is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After 3-4 rounds, pause and check in: “Is the pace working for everyone? Any adjustments needed?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step out of the line and become scorekeeper or coin flipper, then step back in at the back of the line when ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Over-squeezing or gripping too hard: remind players a gentle squeeze is all that’s needed
- False squeeces on heads: debrief the honesty and trust element without shaming
- Grabbing too aggressively at the front: remind players to grab the object, not each other’s hands
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Reaction Clap”: stand in a circle, leader claps once, group claps back immediately , practise reaction speed
- “Wrist Shake”: everyone shakes out both hands for 10 seconds before linking up
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when the squeeze arrived? What made it faster or slower?”
- So What? “What does it feel like to rely on someone you can’t see?”
- Now What? “Where else in camp life do you have to trust someone without seeing what they’re doing?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return the object to its bag or storage spot.
- 30-second check of the area for anything left behind.
