Name and Purpose
- Frozen Tag Rescue builds cooperation, spatial awareness, and the joy of helping others.
- Players practise reading the space, making quick decisions, and supporting teammates.
a.k.a.
- Freeze Tag, Base Tag, Rescue Tag
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 15-25 minutes | Large open space, gym or field
Materials
- 2-3 base objects (cones, hula hoops, pool noodles, or anything safe to hold)
- Optional: 4 boundary cones
- No single-use materials needed
Quick-Run Card
- Two players start as “It.”
- Tagged players freeze , drop to both knees.
- Staff carry or move the base objects around the space.
- A frozen player is unfrozen when they receive a base object from a free player.
- Round ends by whistle; “It” roles rotate.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a clear boundary with cones or use natural markers (fence line, painted lines).
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause everything; 2 whistles = round over, gather.
- Staff should be aware of any players with knee or mobility concerns.
How to Play
- Two players are selected as “It” for the first round.
- On “Go,” “It” tries to tag free players.
- Tagged players drop to both knees and freeze in place.
- They cannot move or speak while frozen.
- Free players can unfreeze a frozen player by bringing them a base object and touching it to their hand.
- The unfrozen player stands up and re-enters the game immediately.
- Staff rotate the base objects through the space to keep the flow moving.
- After 5-7 minutes, whistle signals the end of the round.
- New “It” players are chosen by volunteering or a fair method (e.g., rock-paper-scissors).

Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with mobility concerns can participate as base-object carriers alongside staff, unfreezing teammates by delivering the object.
- Frozen players who cannot kneel may crouch, sit, or stand still with arms crossed , any signal that works for them.
Stewardship Moment
- Base objects are reused every round and every game. Nothing is wasted.
- Reflection: “We rescued each other using the same simple objects over and over. What else in camp could we reuse instead of replace?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves light tagging. For those not comfortable with being touched, a flag-pull variation using tucked bandanas is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After one round, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down , how is everyone feeling about the pace?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step to the boundary line and become a cheerleader or counter. Call “In!” to re-enter at the start of the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collision when running: remind players to watch where they’re going, especially around frozen players on the ground
- Frozen players left isolated for too long: staff actively watch and redirect a free player to help
- “It” role feeling overwhelming for two players: add a third “It” if the group is large or very spread out
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Slow-Mo Tag”: everyone moves in slow motion for 60 seconds to warm up legs and build awareness
- “Statue Pose”: on a signal, everyone freezes in their best statue pose , a fun preview of the freeze mechanic
Debrief Questions
- What? “What did it feel like to be frozen? What did it feel like to rescue someone?”
- So What? “What made rescuing hard? What made it easier?”
- Now What? “Where in daily life do you get a chance to rescue or help someone who is stuck?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return base objects to storage.
- 30-second boundary check for any gear left behind.
