Name and Purpose
- Jack-o-Light is a calm, low-running night game that builds spatial awareness and quiet teamwork.
- Players practise patience, stealth, and communication in a low-light environment.
a.k.a.
- Flashlight Seek, Night Seek
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players | 20-30 minutes | Safe outdoor night space; flat or gently rolling ground with no hazards
Materials
- 1 flashlight per searcher (extras on hand for staff)
- Campfire, lantern, or glow-stick cluster as home base
- Boundary markers: glow sticks or cones with reflective tape
- Whistle for staff (stop signal)
Quick-Run Card
- Walk the boundaries with all players in daylight or early dusk.
- Half the group hides; the other half waits 5 minutes at base.
- Searchers spread out and use flashlights to find hiders.
- Tag = shine the beam on a hider and call “Jack-o-Light!”
- Hiders try to reach base unlit; tagged hiders join the Second Circle at base.
Setup and Boundaries
- Walk the full boundary before play begins so everyone knows the safe zone
- Mark corners with glow sticks or reflective cones visible in low light
- Signal: 1 long whistle = everyone freeze; 2 long whistles = return to base immediately
- Campfire or lantern serves as home base and an orientation point
- Staff should be aware of any campers with night-vision challenges or who find darkness distressing
How to Play
- Divide players into Hiders and Searchers; staff assigns a buddy to any player who prefers company while hiding.
- Hiders scatter within the boundary; Searchers count to 60 (or wait 5 minutes) at base.
- Searchers spread out and move through the space with their flashlights.
- A hider is tagged when a searcher shines their flashlight on them and calls “Jack-o-Light!”
- Tagged hiders return to base and join the Second Circle: they become Watchers who help track how many hiders remain.
- Hiders who reach base without being tagged are safe and celebrate quietly (no shouting to give away others).
- Round ends when all hiders are tagged or have reached base.
- Swap roles for the next round.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Hide in the boundary or search actively with a flashlight
- S (Support): Buddy up with another hider; or be a Watcher at base keeping count
- Q (Quiet): Stay near base as a Watcher; join a search pair rather than going alone
- O (Observer): Stay at the fire with a staff member; observe and join when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players uncomfortable in the dark may stay near the lit base as Watchers for one or more rounds
- Buddy system available for any player who wants company while hiding
Stewardship Moment
- Before play: “We are guests in this space at night. Move carefully and leave it as we found it.”
- After play: collect all glow sticks and dispose of used ones properly; reusable ones go back in the kit
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game happens in low light and involves staying still in the dark. For those not comfortable being in the dark alone, the buddy option or the Watcher role at base is another option.”
- Mid-game check: At the halfway point, staff makes a quick check with all players near base. “How is everyone going? Any adjustments needed?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can return to base at any time by calling “Home!” to the nearest staff member.
Risks and Mitigation
- Trips and falls in low light: walk boundaries in daylight; no running required (walking only unless group is older and space is very flat)
- Separation anxiety or distress in the dark: buddy system and Watcher role available; staff positioned at base and at boundary edge
- Lost players: staff does a count at base every 5 minutes; 2-whistle signal means return immediately
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Flashlight Tag”: in a lit space, players practise shining a beam on a moving target before playing in the dark
- “Boundary Walk”: everyone walks the full perimeter together to build spatial memory before lights go out
Debrief Questions
- What? “What did you notice about moving around in low light?”
- So What? “How did you use your other senses when you could not see clearly?”
- Now What? “When do you rely on your instincts or your teammates instead of having all the information?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all flashlights and check batteries
- Gather all glow sticks and boundary markers
- Ensure campfire is safely managed by staff before the group leaves
