Name and Purpose
- Kick the Can (Stack Edition) adds a two-can stacking mechanic and a group-win condition, making it a great name-learning game for new groups.
- Players practise memory, strategy, and watching out for teammates.
a.k.a.
- Can Stack, Double Can Kick
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-25 players | 20-40 minutes | Outdoor space with hiding spots; open central area for the stacked cans
Materials
- 2 tin cans (safe to kick; no sharp edges); stacked one on top of the other
- Chalk or cones to mark jail zone
- Optional: chalk circle drawn around the cans (“It” must stay outside this circle)
- Optional: whistle for stop signal
Quick-Run Card
- “It” hides their eyes and counts to 20; everyone else hides.
- “It” stacks the cans and begins searching.
- “It” tags or names players to send them to jail; disguising yourself is allowed.
- Free players try to kick the cans; success frees everyone in jail.
- “It” wins by jailing all players; the group wins by kicking the cans 3 times.
Setup and Boundaries
- Stack 2 cans in an open central spot; draw a chalk circle around them if “It” tends to hover
- Mark the jail zone clearly with cones or chalk
- Define the hiding boundary before play (e.g., “stay within the fence line”)
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = end of round, return to the cans
How to Play
- Choose the first “It” by group consensus or volunteer.
- “It” hides their eyes and counts aloud to 20. All other players find hiding spots within the boundary.
- “It” stacks the two cans; from that moment, “It” can tag players by touch or call them out by name.
- Any player tagged or correctly named must go to jail. If “It” calls someone by the wrong name, that player earns a free kick.
- Disguises are encouraged; this is a great name-learning variation.
- Free players may attempt to kick the cans at any time. A successful kick frees everyone in jail; all freed players scatter and hide again. “It” restacks and the search resumes.
- “It” wins when all players are in jail. Players win as a group if the cans are kicked 3 times.
- The player who kicks the third winning kick chooses who is “It” next, or may volunteer themselves.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Sprint for the cans; play as “It”
- S (Support): Stay near jailed teammates and signal when “It” is distracted
- Q (Quiet): Hide close to base; focus on timing over speed
- O (Observer): Watch a round; join as a hider or helper when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players may walk rather than run; the optional chalk circle keeps “It” from guarding the cans too closely and gives slower movers a fair chance at kicking
- For groups still learning names, “It” may use a description (clothing, hat colour) instead of names
Stewardship Moment
- After play, collect both cans and store safely
- Reflection: “This game is about remembering each other. What’s one thing you learned about a teammate today?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves being named or tagged by one person. For those not comfortable being called out individually, let a staff member know and we will use the description option instead.”
- Mid-game check: Check in with jailed players after a few minutes. “How is the wait feeling? Want to do a quick side challenge while you wait?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may step to the sideline at any time and re-enter as a free player when ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- “It” hovering over the cans: use the optional chalk circle rule (“It” stays outside it)
- Tripping while sprinting for the cans: walk the space before play; remind players to slow near the can zone
- Long waits in jail: Second Circle (a quick side game like rock-paper-scissors) for jailed players while they wait to be freed
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Name Circle”: players say their own name and do a movement; group mirrors it
- Quick boundary walk so all players know the hiding zone
Debrief Questions
- What? “What strategy did you use to decide when to go for the cans?”
- So What? “How did it feel when your teammates were freed because of your kick?”
- Now What? “When do you take action for the group even when it is risky for you?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect both cans; check for sharp edges
- Remove chalk or cones
- Check the area for items left behind
