Name and Purpose
- Meltdown Tag is a creative movement game where tagged players have a dramatic slow “melt” and their teammates can save them in time.
- Players practise spatial awareness, quick decisions, and looking out for one another.
a.k.a.
- Slow-Mo Tag, Freeze Melt
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 15-25 minutes | Open field or gymnasium; flat surface; at least 15m x 15m
Materials
- Cones for boundary markers
- Optional: 1-2 soft pinnies or coloured bands to identify “It” at the start
Quick-Run Card
- Mark boundaries; one player starts as “It.”
- “It” tags free players; tagged players begin a slow melt to the ground.
- A free player may touch a melting player before they reach the ground to stop the melt and free them.
- A player who melts fully to the ground becomes an additional “It.”
- Round ends on the whistle; celebrate the last free players standing.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a clear boundary with cones
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = end of round, everyone stand up
- Check the ground for wet patches or debris before play
- Staff should be aware of any campers with knee or back sensitivities who may need a modification for the melting motion
How to Play
- One player starts as “It.” If the group is large (20+), start with 2 players as “It.”
- On “Go!” “It” moves through the space and tags free players with a gentle touch.
- A tagged player immediately begins to melt: they slowly lower themselves toward the ground over about 5-10 seconds.
- Any free player may save a melting player by touching them gently before they reach the ground. A saved player stands back up and continues playing.
- If a player melts fully to the ground (both hands and body touching the floor), they become an additional “It” and stand up to begin tagging.
- The round ends on the whistle. The last free players standing are celebrated.
- Start a new round with fresh volunteers as “It.”
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Play as “It”; sprint to save melting teammates
- S (Support): Focus on rescuing melting teammates rather than running from “It”
- Q (Quiet): Move at a walking pace; choose when to save or when to dodge
- O (Observer): Watch a round from the sideline; join as a free player when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with mobility considerations may choose a “slow melt” that ends in a seated position rather than full floor contact; they are still rescued the same way
- “It” may tag by holding up a hand near a player (“light tag”) rather than physical contact for players who prefer reduced contact
Stewardship Moment
- One-minute sweep: players collect cones together after the round
- Reflection: “What made you decide to go save someone instead of running away?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves a light touch to tag and to rescue. For those not comfortable with physical contact, raise your hand and your ‘It’ will use the light-tag variation (hand raised near you instead of touching).”
- Mid-game check: After the first few tags, pause. “How is everyone doing? Any modifications needed?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player may step to the sideline at any time by raising both hands. They rejoin by calling “In!” to the nearest staff member.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players melting on uneven or hard ground: check surface before play; mats available at the edge for players who want extra cushioning
- Multiple “It” players colliding while chasing the same target: remind “It” players to spread out and cover different zones
- Players pretending to melt quickly to become “It”: frame becoming “It” as a fun role, not a punishment, to reduce the incentive
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Slow Motion Walk”: everyone walks in slow motion across the space to practise the melt pace
- “Mirror Melt”: pairs face each other; one slowly melts and the other mirrors; swap
Debrief Questions
- What? “When did you choose to rescue someone instead of saving yourself?”
- So What? “What made it feel worth the risk to go help a teammate?”
- Now What? “When do you look out for others in your day-to-day life?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all cones
- Return any pinnies or bands to storage
- Check the play area for dropped items
