Name and Purpose
- Shoe Match is a relaxed, low-energy icebreaker that sparks conversation and laughter.
- Players practise observation, creative reasoning, and getting to know one another.
a.k.a.
- Sole Mates, Who Wore This?
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Indoor or shaded outdoor space; players should be comfortable sitting
Materials
- Sticky labels or small pieces of masking tape (one per player)
- Markers (one per player or shared)
- A designated pile area for shoes
Quick-Run Card
- Each player writes their name on a label and sticks it inside or on the sole of one shoe.
- Players remove both shoes and place labelled shoes in the pile.
- Counsellor picks one shoe and three players (including the owner).
- Group guesses which person the shoe belongs to.
- Repeat until every player has been matched.
Setup and Boundaries
- Set up a clear pile area for shoes away from the sitting space
- Signal: one clap = attention back to the counsellor
- Check that the floor is clean and safe for bare or sock-covered feet
How to Play
- Give each player a label and a marker. They write their name and stick the label to one shoe.
- Players remove both shoes and add the labelled shoe to the group pile.
- Counsellor picks one shoe from the pile and holds it up.
- Counsellor also selects 3 players to stand (one of whom owns the shoe). The others are decoys.
- The group votes on who owns the shoe. Decoys can try to bluff.
- Reveal the answer. Owner shares one fun fact about the shoe (optional).
- Continue until every player has been matched to their shoe.
- Optional finish: players find their own shoes and put them back on. First fully re-shoed player wins a round of applause.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Stand as a decoy; make a convincing bluff
- S (Support): Help quieter players get their turn sooner; encourage good-natured voting
- Q (Quiet): Observe the shoe closely and make a careful guess
- O (Observer): Watch the first round before volunteering to be a decoy
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer not to remove shoes can label the outside of their shoe instead and remain seated
- Players with foot-related sensitivities can participate as the label-writer or vote-caller rather than removing shoes
Stewardship Moment
- Collect all labels and markers after the game
- If labels are reusable sticker paper, peel them off and store them for next time
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game asks you to take off one shoe. For those not comfortable removing shoes, sticking a label to the outside of your shoe is another option.”
- Mid-game check: Keep the atmosphere light; check in if anyone looks uncomfortable.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players can pass on being a decoy. They can rejoin as a voter at any round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Bare feet on dirty or sharp surfaces: check the floor before play; allow socks to remain on
- Player embarrassed by shoe condition: normalise all footwear with a quick “shoes tell stories” framing before play
- Labels fall off before reveal: use masking tape or write directly on a small piece of tape for better adhesion
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Two Truths One Shoe”: players share two true things and one false thing about their shoe
- “Shoe Story”: players have 15 seconds to share where their shoes have taken them
Debrief Questions
- What? “What clues did you use to guess the right shoe?”
- So What? “What surprised you about someone’s shoe?”
- Now What? “What does noticing small details tell you about paying attention to people?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect labels and markers
- Ensure all players have their shoes back before moving to the next activity
